Chapter 5 - Declan’s Blind SpotThree months earlier Maisie had said:

“Ms. Kendrick gets mad.”

Declan had been answering email.

“Everyone gets frustrated sometimes.”

Two months earlier:

“She hides my pictures.”

“Maybe she’s keeping them safe.”

Six weeks earlier:

“She says Daddy asks too many questions.”

Declan laughed.

“Daddy probably does.”

Conversation over.

Now each sentence returned differently.

Dr. Nina Patel, a child therapist, listened while Maisie played with wooden horses on the floor.

Declan whispered:

“I missed it.”

“You missed some things.”

“She told me.”

“She told you in four-year-old language.”

“And I translated it into whatever felt normal.”

Nina nodded.

That was exactly what happened.

Declan was good at context.

Adults gave incomplete information.

His brain automatically supplied the missing explanation.

With Maisie, that habit had become dangerous.

Maybe she means…

Probably…

I’m sure…

Nina told him:

“Your job isn’t to become suspicious of everyone around your daughter.”

“What is it?”

“Stop finishing her story before she finishes telling it.”

At home Maisie touched her uneven hair.

“Ms. Kendrick mad because Daddy?”

Declan wanted to say no.

Nothing was because of him.

But that would not be entirely honest.

Kendrick targeted Maisie partly because Declan challenged the land transaction.

Still, responsibility belonged to Kendrick.

He crouched.

“She was angry at me.”

Maisie nodded.

“But she chose what she did to you.”

Maisie stared.

“You make?”

“No.”

“I make?”

“No.”

Her shoulders relaxed.

Nobody else’s anger belonged to Maisie.

That became the first lesson Declan learned after the video.

Not finance.

May you like

Not property law.

Listening.
