Chapter 20 - “I Thought the Ranch Owed Me”At sentencing Kendrick spoke.

“My family had owned that creek tract longer than the Fosters had operated some sections of their ranch.”

Her father repaired roads.

Her mother negotiated early leases.

“I began believing that history gave us a greater claim.”

Then the debt worsened.

“The ranch stopped looking like a family and employees and animals.”

She swallowed.

“It became the buyer that could save me.”

When Declan questioned the price, she experienced it as betrayal.

Then came Maisie.

“She spilled paint water.”

Kendrick cried.

“I was already furious at her father.”

Pause.

“I used a child to punish an adult.”

For once, no excuse.

“And when I understood what I had done, I did not protect Maisie.”

She looked down.

“I protected myself.”

The confession did not repair the haircut.
