Chapter 17 - Why Maisie?During deposition Kendrick finally explained why she chose Maisie.
Declan’s attorney asked:
“Why create false reports about a four-year-old?”
Kendrick stared at the table.
“Declan was interfering with the land sale.”
“He was reviewing it.”
“He was turning the trustees against me.”
“Why his daughter?”
Silence.
“Ms. Kendrick?”
“Because I thought he would step away if the household situation became impossible.”
She believed that if the conflict with Maisie escalated, Declan would focus on his daughter and withdraw from the trust review.
“Did you plan to cut her hair?”
“No.”
“What happened?”
“She spilled paint water.”
That ordinary.
That small.
Kendrick had already been furious at Declan.
Maisie made a four-year-old mistake.
The anger moved downward.
“So you punished the daughter for the father?”
Kendrick closed her eyes.
“Yes.”
“And then ordered her to lie?”
“Yes.”
