Chapter 8 - The Report Against EliasThe first written report had been created four months earlier.

Garrett kept it in Hollow Creek’s insurance files.
INCIDENT — MINOR FAILURE TO SECURE EAST GATE.
A goat escaped.
No injury.
The report blamed Elias.
Sarah remembered the incident.
Elias had been six feet away when the gate opened.
Garrett himself had closed it earlier.
Another report:
MINOR FAILED TO IDENTIFY FEEDING IRREGULARITY.
Another:
CHILD NEGLIGENCE — WATER TROUGH.
Sarah stared.
“Why are there formal reports about an eight-year-old?”
Garrett had typed each one.
Rachel reviewed timestamps.
Several were created days or weeks after the underlying events.
Not routine contemporaneous records.
A history being assembled.
For what?
Blue Ridge’s attorneys answered indirectly.
An internal email surfaced during document requests.
GARRETT:
Child trust complicates approval.
BLUE RIDGE CONSULTANT:
If trustee concludes long-term agricultural exposure is not in minor’s best financial interest, perhaps conversion to liquid assets becomes easier.
Garrett:
Working on risk file.
Sarah stopped breathing.
Risk file.
Rachel read it again.
“That is bad.”
“Illegal?”
“Not necessarily.”
Sarah slammed the table.
“He was creating incidents about my son.”
“Sarah.”
“I know.”
Facts.
Not rage.
Rachel continued:
“It strongly supports that he was documenting perceived farm risks with Elias’s trust in mind.”
The consultant responded later:
Do not manufacture anything. Document actual issues only.
That mattered.
Blue Ridge had apparently told Garrett not to create events.
Whether Garrett followed that instruction remained the question.
Then Sarah discovered the sick-goat report.
Created before Dr. Wilson’s diagnosis.
Title:
ELIAS CARTER — ANIMAL NEGLECT EVENT.
Sarah stared at the timestamp.
6:07 p.m.
Fourteen minutes after Garrett told Elias he would sleep in the barn.
Before any veterinarian concluded neglect.
Garrett had decided the cause before an expert arrived.
Why?
May you like
Because the cause was never the point.
The record was.
