Chapter 16 - The Last EmailThe strongest evidence arrived from Blue Ridge.

Not the bottle.

An email.

Garrett to the consultant.

Subject:

Timing.

GARRETT:

Need Sarah convinced livestock risk is increasing. Another incident may move her off emotional attachment.

Consultant:

What incident?

Garrett:

Nothing planned. Just saying problems happen.

Consultant:

Do not manufacture risk. We will walk if anything improper occurs.

Sarah read it twice.

Nothing planned.

Not a confession.

But Garrett was thinking about animal-health problems as leverage.

Before Clover became sick.

Before Elias was punished.

Blue Ridge’s consultant preserved the email because it made him uncomfortable.

Then another:

GARRETT:

If minor stops identifying with farm, trust conversion becomes easier long-term.

That sentence changed the case emotionally.

Not because it proved Garrett made Clover sick.

It proved he wanted Elias detached from Hollow Creek.

Farm as burden.

Farm as danger.

Farm as punishment.

Sarah suddenly understood the barn.

“Tonight, you’re bringing your blanket out here.”

“You’re sleeping beside it.”

The punishment had done more than frighten Elias.

It tied the farm to fear.

Rachel said:

“Be careful.”

Sarah nodded.

“We still cannot say he caused Clover’s illness.”

“No.”

“But we can say he viewed livestock problems as leverage.”

“Yes.”

“And he documented Elias negatively for trust purposes.”

“Yes.”

“And he punished Elias using the farm.”

May you like

“Yes.”

For once, the proven truth was enough.
