Chapter 11 - The Second GoatDr. Wilson’s outside consultant found something meaningful.

Not a precise answer.

A pattern.

Clover and Atlas had experienced acute symptoms inconsistent with ordinary neglect.

The report did not identify a definitive cause.

But it said both episodes warranted investigation for possible external exposure.

Sarah read the sentence twice.

Possible.

Not confirmed.

Garrett’s attorney emphasized that.

Correctly.

Then Miguel remembered an invoice.

A small farm-supply purchase Garrett asked him not to enter through Hollow Creek accounts.

Cash reimbursement.

He had saved the receipt in his truck.

The product name had faded.

Only partial category information remained.

Rachel handed it to investigators.

They did not treat it as proof.

The mysterious bottle still had not been found.

Then Mason called Elias.

“My dad has boxes at Grandma’s.”

Sarah took the phone.

“What boxes?”

“From the farmhouse.”

“When?”

“He brought them two weeks ago.”

Rachel obtained formal discovery access through Garrett’s attorney.

Among financial records and clothing was a locked metal toolbox.

Inside were ordinary farm products.

Veterinary supplies.

Tools.

And one small dark bottle.

White label.

Black skull symbol.

Elias identified the appearance.

“It looks like it.”

Not:

That is it.

Looks like it.

Investigators preserved it.

Testing later detected a veterinary-relevant substance that should have been stored securely and documented.

The report did not establish Garrett had administered it to any goat.

The bottle itself did not prove poisoning.

But purchase records showed Garrett acquired it shortly before Atlas became sick.

Another bottle from the same purchase had never been accounted for.

The mystery tightened.

Still no direct act.

No video of use.

No confession.

Garrett’s defense remained possible.

He used farm products legitimately.

The illnesses were coincidence.

Elias was genuinely careless.

Sarah wanted more.

Rachel said:

“Truth is not required to arrive in the amount you emotionally want.”

Sarah hated that sentence.

Because it was right.
