Chapter 12 - The Community Chooses SidesThe local farming community split.

One group defended Garrett.
He had increased revenue.
Modernized operations.
Expanded wholesale accounts.
Helped save Hollow Creek.
Another group believed Sarah.
The barn footage spread after someone leaked it from court exhibits.
Elias became recognizable.
That infuriated Sarah more than anything.
She had protected his name.
The internet did not care.
Comments appeared.
Farm kids sleep in barns all the time.
Spoiled child.
Stepdad made him responsible.
Other comments went too far in the opposite direction.
Monster.
Animal poisoner.
Psychopath.
Sarah hated those too.
No court had established Garrett made Clover sick.
She told a reporter exactly that.
“The barn punishment happened. We have evidence of that. The cause of Clover’s illness remains under investigation.”
The reporter looked surprised.
“You’re defending him?”
“No.”
Sarah’s voice hardened.
“I’m defending facts.”
That quote spread.
Unexpectedly, it helped.
People trusted Sarah more because she refused to turn suspicion into certainty.
Garrett hated it.
His attorney released a statement accusing Sarah of using a child and an animal-health event to gain leverage in divorce proceedings.
For two days, Sarah almost responded publicly.
Rachel stopped her.
“Documents beat arguments.”
So Sarah waited.
Waiting felt weak.

Until she realized Garrett’s entire system depended on everyone reacting emotionally.
Not reacting became power.
