Chapter 13 - The Bookkeeper’s BackupBen Shaw had backup files.

Old versions of Garrett’s risk reports.
The difference between versions changed everything.
Original draft:
Clover illness — cause undetermined.
Updated twenty minutes later:
Clover illness — Elias failed to monitor animal.
Then:
Repeated minor negligence pattern supports concern regarding continued minor ownership exposure.
Sarah stared.
Ownership exposure.
Garrett was translating childhood mistakes into financial arguments.
Another document:
Possible future trust buyout using independent valuation.
Another:
Family holding company could allocate units among all children.
All children.
Elias.
Mason.
And possibly future children.
Again, none inherently illegal as theoretical planning.
But the timing mattered.
The risk reports fed the restructuring proposal.
The restructuring reduced Elias’s control.
The Blue Ridge deal paid Garrett personally.
Everything connected.
Then Ben handed Rachel an email he had never opened carefully.
GARRETT:
If Sarah sees the arrangement as protecting Elias from farm risk, she’ll sign.
BEN:
What arrangement?
No reply.
Ben looked ashamed.
“I should have followed up.”
“Why didn’t you?” Sarah asked.
He sighed.
“Because Garrett handled everything.”
Same sentence.
Different adult.
“I sent him questions. He answered quickly. You were always busy.”
Sarah flinched.
“I was.”
Ben continued.
“You trusted him.”
“So did you.”
“Yes.”
Nobody escaped clean.
That made the story stronger.

And sadder.
Garrett’s manipulation had grown in spaces other people left empty.
