Chapter 24 - The First Harvest Without EleanorAutumn arrived.

The corn came down clean.

Cattle prices held.

Hawthorne Farm posted its first genuinely profitable year in three seasons.

No inflated inventory.

No hidden transfers.

No borrowed illusion.

Luke brought a cake to the year-end meeting.

Lena laughed.

“Are we a corporation or kindergarten?”

“Profitable kindergarten.”

Maya decorated the office whiteboard.

She drew four people.

Caleb.

Nia.

Herself.

Samuel.

Then added Eleanor farther away.

Caleb noticed.

“You put Grandma in.”

“She still happened.”

That sentence impressed him.

History did not require approval.

It required truth.

At sunset they walked the north pasture.

Maya asked:

“Will this all be mine?”

“No.”

She looked offended.

Caleb laughed.

“You own twenty percent now. The rest depends on what happens over a long time.”

“But when you die?”

“I plan not to for quite a while.”

“Dad.”

“Yes, eventually you’ll inherit much of what I have.”

She kicked a stone.

“That sounds scary.”

“It is.”

“Can I sell it?”

“When you’re an adult, depending on the agreements, probably.”

“Would you be mad?”

Caleb thought of Eleanor.

The woman who believed land proved loyalty.

“No.”

Maya looked surprised.

“I hope you make the best decision for your life.”

“What if I sell everything?”

“I’ll haunt you.”

“Dad!”

He laughed.

Then became serious.

“You do not owe dead people your whole future.”

May you like

Maya took his hand.

That was the lesson Eleanor had never learned.
