Name.

Racism.

Fear.

Betrayal.

Shame.

Belonging.

One afternoon Dr. Elise Warren asked:

“What do you want from your grandmother?”

Maya thought for almost a minute.

“I want her to know I’m really Dad’s daughter.”

Dr. Warren waited.

“She already knows.”

“I know.”

“Then what do you mean?”

Maya looked at Caleb.

“I want her to know she can’t say I’m not family and make it true.”

Caleb’s eyes filled.

Not the money.

Not the land.

Not even Eleanor.

Belonging was not hers to grant.

Samuel.

His father.

His grandfather.

Now Caleb added Nia.

Nia bottle-feeding a calf.

Nia at the closing table when she invested her inheritance.

Nia holding three-year-old Maya beside the north pasture.
