Chapter 18 - The Farmhouse DoorChild-welfare authorities closed Maya’s immediate safety case after finding Caleb protective and establishing no-contact conditions with Eleanor.

The sheriff returned Maya’s backpack as evidence no longer needed.
Mud stains remained.
Caleb offered to buy a new one.
Maya said no.
“Why?”
“I want this one.”
He understood.
They returned to the farmhouse for the first time together.
Maya stopped at the porch.
Same steps.
Same door.
No rain.
Still, her hands shook.
“We can leave.”
“No.”
Caleb waited.
Maya touched the doorknob.
Then stepped inside.
The living room looked ordinary.
Too ordinary.
Her homework was gone.
The stew pot cleaned.
The fireplace cold.
Caleb had expected drama.
Instead, Maya walked directly to the office.
She stood where she had found the loan paper.
Then said:
“I’m done.”
“That’s it?”
“For today.”
They left.
Caleb did not tell her she was brave.
She did not need another identity to perform.

She had gone inside because she chose to.
