Chapter 15 - The Ledger in the FreezerLuke found the ledger accidentally.

An old chest freezer in the machine shed had stopped working.
He emptied it.
Under a removable bottom panel:
A waterproof document case.
Inside:
Farm sale tickets.
Handwritten payment notes.
Garrison Ridge drafts.
EHM Holdings statements.
Eleanor’s private ledger.
Every diverted cattle payment.
Every loan transfer.
Every personal expense paid through EHM.
Then one entry stunned Caleb.
NIA BUYOUT — FUTURE.
Repeated for three years.
Numbers beside it.
20%.
Projected values.
Eleanor had been calculating how to remove Maya’s interest long before the Garrison Ridge deal.
One note:
If Caleb remarries, argue diversification.
Another:
Minor beneficiary better served by cash equivalent.
Rachel explained.
Not inherently sinister to consider diversification.
But combined with the trustee-removal plan, side payment and manufactured storm incident, it showed a consistent goal.
Convert Maya’s farm ownership into cash.
Control the sale.
Caleb stared at the ledger.
Maya had never been just a child Eleanor rejected.
She was an obstacle on a spreadsheet.
That realization was almost unbearable.
Then he saw another line.
C.H. insurance?
Caleb frowned.
“What is that?”
Rachel flipped pages.
Life insurance.
Caleb’s policy.
Farm-funded key-person insurance.
Normal for business.
Nothing sinister.
For a terrifying second, Caleb’s mind went somewhere darker.
Rachel saw it.
“Stop.”
He looked at her.
“We do not turn every notation into murder.”
Caleb exhaled.
She was right.
Fear created bad stories too.
He closed the ledger.

They already had enough truth.
They did not need invented horror.
