Chapter 17 - Caleb’s SignatureThe forensic handwriting report came back.

High probability the questioned signature was not written by Caleb.

More important:

Electronic metadata showed the loan PDF had been edited on Eleanor’s laptop after Caleb’s last known review.

Janet Moss admitted improper notarization.

And Lena produced an earlier unsigned version from backup.

Eleanor’s defense narrowed.

She claimed Caleb had verbally authorized her to sign.

Caleb denied it.

No written authorization existed.

The prosecutor filed charges involving forgery and financial fraud.

Charges.

Not convictions.

Caleb explained that distinction to Maya carefully.

“Does Grandma go to jail?”

“I don’t know.”

“Do you want her to?”

Caleb struggled.

“I want what happened to be taken seriously.”

“That’s not what I asked.”

He smiled sadly.

Maya had inherited Nia’s precision.

“Part of me does.”

“Which part?”

“The angry part.”

“What does the other part want?”

Caleb looked toward the barn.

“My mom back.”

Maya’s expression softened.

“But I don’t think that person exists the way I remember her.”

Maya whispered:

“I miss Pancake Saturdays.”

Eleanor used to make pancakes shaped like animals.

People were complicated.

The same grandmother who once made a rabbit pancake had thrown Maya into a storm.

Good memories did not cancel harm.

Harm did not erase that the good memories had felt real.

Healing would require room for both.
