Chapter 16 - The Grandmother’s OfferEleanor requested mediation.

Not through Caleb.
Through her attorney.
Terms:
She would surrender management rights.
Transfer her thirty-five-percent LLC interest to Caleb over time.
Cooperate with refinancing.
Withdraw trustee litigation.
In exchange:
No civil claim against her personal assets beyond specified restitution.
And Caleb would submit a letter asking prosecutors for leniency.
Rachel asked:
“What do you want?”
Caleb thought of the storm.
Maya’s wet hair.
The porch light going dark.
Then of Samuel’s letter.
Take care of your girl.
“I want Maya safe.”
“She is.”
“I want the farm stable.”
“It can be.”
“I want Mom to admit what she did.”
Rachel looked at him.
“That is the one thing no agreement can guarantee.”
Caleb knew.
He asked Maya a different question.
Not about legal terms.
“Would you ever want to see Grandma again?”
Maya froze.
“You don’t have to decide now.”
“What if I say no?”
“Then no.”
“Ever?”
“Ever is a big word.”
Maya thought.
“I don’t want her near me now.”
“Okay.”
“What if she gets nice?”
Caleb’s chest tightened.
“Nice is not the same as safe.”
Maya nodded.
The mediation lasted seven hours.
Eleanor admitted financial misconduct in carefully negotiated language.
She did not admit forging Caleb’s signature.
That issue remained part of the criminal investigation.
She surrendered operational control.
Agreed to transfer fifteen percentage points of her LLC interest toward restitution and debt settlement.
Retained twenty percent subject to restrictions.
Caleb did not ask prosecutors for leniency.
He agreed only to provide a truthful statement if asked.
Eleanor stared at him across the table.
“You would send your own mother to jail?”
“I don’t decide that.”
“You could help me.”
“I spent my life helping you avoid consequences.”
May you like
She flinched.
“That ends here.”
