Chapter 5 - What Lucas WantedLucas Parker had wanted Aaron Blake quiet.

Not about the farm.
About something he saw.
That was the new lead.
Ethan finally told David everything.
Months earlier, Ethan and Lucas had been on the junior varsity baseball team.
Lucas bragged constantly.
Money.
Cars.
His father’s connections.
Then one afternoon Lucas showed Ethan a photograph.
Richard Parker and a county planning consultant sitting inside a private box at a football game.
“So?” David asked.
Ethan hesitated.
“Lucas said his dad already knew where the bypass would go.”
That mattered.
The bypass route had not been publicly finalized.
If Richard Parker obtained confidential planning information and purchased the Blake farm using it, there could be serious ethical or legal issues.
Still not proof.
Then Ethan said:
“Aaron overheard him.”
Mia’s stomach tightened.
“Lucas?”
“Yes.”
“He heard Lucas bragging?”
“Yeah.”
“And then Aaron got hurt.”
Ethan nodded.
David stood.
He walked to the window.
His hands shook.
Mia asked:
“Dad?”
“I’m okay.”
“You don’t look okay.”
“I’m trying not to decide what happened before evidence does.”
Elena would have been proud.
Mia was too.
Then David’s phone buzzed.
A message from an unknown number.
STOP USING CHILDREN TO DESTROY FAMILIES.
David showed Elena.
She preserved it.
Two hours later, another message:
ASK YOUR DAUGHTER WHAT ETHAN REALLY RECORDED BEFORE THE FOOD.
Mia stared.
“What does that mean?”
Ethan checked his original cafeteria video.
The recording had begun earlier than he remembered.
Thirty-eight seconds earlier.
The camera was pointed mostly at the floor because he had not raised it yet.
Audio remained.
Mrs. Parker speaking with Assistant Principal Sandra Mills.
Mills:
You cannot keep doing this in public.
Mrs. Parker:
Then tell David Bennett to stop.
Mills:
Richard said it was handled.
Mrs. Parker:
It was handled until his daughter started asking Aaron questions.
Mia stared at Ethan.
“I asked Aaron one question.”
“When?”
“Last month.”
Aaron had returned briefly to collect school records.
Mia saw him near counseling.
She asked:
“Are you okay?”
That was all.
Apparently Mrs. Parker believed even that was dangerous.
Then Mills said one more sentence:
The foundation payment bought silence. Don’t make it worthless.
Nobody spoke.
Ethan looked pale.
David replayed it.
Again.
The words did not change.
The foundation payment bought silence.

For the first time, they had direct evidence that someone inside school administration understood the payment as more than charity.
And Assistant Principal Sandra Mills had just placed herself in the center of it.
