Chapter 23 - Mrs. Parker’s Last VisitDonna Parker returned to Westbridge after hours to collect her belongings.

A district employee supervised.

Her classroom had already been reassigned.

She packed family photographs.

Books.

A coffee mug.

A framed award:

TEACHER OF THE YEAR.

She turned it face down.

In the hallway, she passed the cafeteria.

Stopped.

The lights were off.

Rows of empty tables.

The center aisle.

For months, she had told herself she lost control for thirty seconds.

The hearing record made that story impossible.

She had targeted Mia for weeks.

Ignored warnings.

Used a child to punish a father.

Thirty seconds had merely made the hidden pattern visible.

Donna pressed her hand against the cafeteria door.

Then walked away.

Nobody watched.

That may have been the bitterest part.

For years, authority made her feel important.

Now the school continued without her.
