Chapter 17 - David and Aaron’s FatherDavid visited Aaron’s father, Michael Blake.

Not as an investigator.
As a father.
Michael stood inside a rented house.
The farm was gone.
The money had paid debts.
Some remained.
He looked older.
David said:
“I judged you.”
Michael nodded.
“You should.”
“No.”
David shook his head.
“I understand you now.”
“That’s worse.”
They sat.
Michael whispered:
“My son was hurt and I calculated the mortgage.”
David had no answer.
Michael continued.
“That’s the worst thing I’ve ever admitted.”
David told him about Bennett Construction.
The debt.
His own fear.
Michael looked at him.
“What would you have done?”
May you like
“I don’t know.”
That was the most honest thing either man said.
