Chapter 8 - The Price of a Broken Man

Victor Hale's name had floated around Adrian's life for almost two years.

Now it began appearing everywhere.

Halcyon Capital had quietly purchased debt tied to two Cole Maritime suppliers.

It held a minority position through affiliated funds.

It had hired a consulting firm run by Sloane's former business partner.

None of that was illegal by itself.

Together, it looked strategic.

Nolan brought in forensic accountant Priya Desai.

She arrived at Adrian's office carrying one laptop and zero patience.

"You understand I'm not here to tell you what you want to hear?"

"That's becoming my favorite sentence."

"Good. Then don't interrupt."

Camille laughed from the other side of the conference table.

"I like her."

Priya opened a spreadsheet.

"Corinne received three hundred twenty thousand dollars over eighteen months through a company called Bellmere Creative."

Adrian frowned.

"She told me Bellmere was her consulting company."

"It is."

"Then what's strange?"

"It has one client."

"Who?"

"Northlight Advisory."

Camille leaned forward.

"And Northlight is?"

Priya clicked.

"Funded primarily by a Halcyon affiliate."

Adrian went still.

"How much did they pay Corinne?"

"Three hundred twenty thousand."

"For what?"

"The invoices say lifestyle positioning, stakeholder access and executive brand strategy."

Camille swore.

Adrian stared at the screen.

"Executive brand strategy."

Priya nodded.

"Could be legitimate consulting."

"But you don't think it is."

"I don't think anything without evidence."

"Everyone I hire says that."

"You hire competent people."

Camille murmured, "Finally."

Adrian ignored her.

Priya switched tabs.

"Sloane's firm received one point four million from another Halcyon affiliate over two years."

"Jesus."

"Tessa's PR agency received six hundred thousand."

"And Brooke?"

"Contracts worth roughly two point one million were conditionally promised but mostly not paid."

Adrian looked at her.

"Conditionally?"

"The agreements activate after a 'control event.'"

The room went quiet.

"What qualifies?"

Priya read from the document.

"Sale, merger, executive transition, medical incapacity of controlling founder, or other transfer of governance."

Camille stared at Adrian.

"Your breakdown was literally in the contract."

Priya corrected her.

"Not literally."

"You know what I mean."

"I do. I dislike imprecision."

Adrian almost smiled.

Then didn't.

"So Corinne destabilizes me."

Priya leaned back.

"That's a theory."

"My daughter dies—"

Camille flinched.

He forced himself to continue.

"Or nearly dies. I collapse. Halcyon approaches. Corinne tells me selling is the only way to survive."

"Potentially."

"Then her friends get paid."

"Potentially."

"And Corinne?"

Priya opened another file.

"Corinne had a side letter."

Adrian's stomach tightened.

"A what?"

"If Halcyon acquired at least forty percent of voting control within twenty-four months, Bellmere Creative would receive a success fee."

"How much?"

Priya looked directly at him.

"Twenty million dollars."

Camille stood.

"What?"

Adrian didn't move.

Twenty million.

His wife's price.

Not for killing Lila, legally speaking.

For getting Adrian to sell.

For breaking him until he did.

He remembered something Brooke had said.

Corinne said grief—or fear—was the only thing stronger than your need to control everything.

Adrian leaned back.

"She didn't need Lila dead."

"No," Camille said quietly.

"She just needed me destroyed."

Priya closed the laptop.

"Be careful with that conclusion."

Adrian looked at her.

"Why?"

"Because people convince themselves there is a moral difference between intending an outcome and engineering a situation where that outcome becomes likely."

Nobody spoke.

Adrian thought of Corinne's raised foot.

Whatever the original plan had been, something had changed on that bow.

Maybe panic.

Maybe rage.

Maybe opportunity.

Maybe she'd looked down at Lila's fingers and decided to finish what she'd started.

That night, Detective Ruiz called.

"We interviewed Brooke."

"And?"

"Her attorney won't let me give you details."

"Can you tell me if she admitted Corinne pushed Lila?"

Ruiz paused.

"Yes."

Adrian shut his eyes.

"Anything else?"

"She identified Sloane as the person who disabled the camera using Corinne's phone."

"Can you arrest them?"

"Not yet."

"Why the hell not?"

"Because I'm building something that survives court."

"My daughter—"

"Is safe with you?"

"Yes."

"Then let me do my job."

Adrian breathed through his nose.

Ruiz continued.

"We obtained preservation orders for digital accounts tied to all four women."

"And Hale?"

"We're not there yet."

"He's behind this."

"Maybe."

Adrian hated the word.

Then Ruiz added, "But I can tell you one thing."

"What?"

"Sloane tried to remotely wipe her phone three hours ago."

Adrian opened his eyes.

"Did it work?"

Ruiz's voice hardened.

"No."

For the first time since the yacht, Adrian felt something other than fear.

May you like

He felt the shape of the truth beginning to close around them.
