Chapter 3 - Three Different Lies

Miami police met the yacht before sunrise.

Adrian had made the call himself.

Corinne had objected.

Quietly at first.

Then less quietly.

"You're really doing this?"

"My daughter says you pushed her."

"She's three."

"Stop saying that like it makes her invisible."

By the time officers boarded, Corinne had stopped arguing.

She became graceful instead.

Shaken wife.

Concerned stepmother.

Woman enduring a misunderstanding.

Adrian watched the performance from across the salon and felt physically cold.

Detective Elena Ruiz interviewed the witnesses separately.

That was the first crack.

Sloane went first.

She said Lila had been "running in circles" near the edge.

Tessa said Lila had "backed away while playing."

Corinne said Lila had "twisted suddenly when her toy fell."

Three descriptions.

Three different movements.

Only one child.

Ruiz came back to Adrian forty minutes later.

"Mr. Cole, I'd like your daughter examined at Jackson Memorial."

"Of course."

"And I don't want her repeatedly questioned."

"Agreed."

"Kids that age can be highly suggestible."

Adrian's shoulders tensed.

Ruiz raised a hand.

"I'm not saying she's wrong. I'm saying we protect the integrity of what she remembers."

He nodded.

"Understood."

Across the room, Corinne hugged Sloane.

Brooke stood alone at the window.

Adrian approached her.

She saw him coming and whispered, "Don't."

"Don't what?"

"Talk to me."

"Why?"

Her eyes filled.

"I can't."

Adrian lowered his voice.

"Brooke, my daughter almost died."

"I know."

"You were there."

She looked toward Corinne.

Adrian followed her gaze.

Corinne was watching.

Brooke immediately turned away.

"I need a lawyer."

That was the first honest thing any of them had said.

At the hospital, Lila underwent X-rays, observation and an evaluation by a pediatric specialist.

No fractures.

Bruising along her ribs and forearms.

A scrape across her shoulder.

Physical injuries that would heal.

Adrian sat beside the bed while she watched cartoons with Pip tucked under her chin.

His phone vibrated constantly.

Board members.

Public relations.

The yacht captain.

His sister Camille.

Finally, Camille stopped calling and simply arrived.

She came through the hospital door in jeans and an old Howard University sweatshirt, hair tied back, fury already visible.

"Where is she?"

Lila raised one hand.

"Auntie."

Camille crossed the room and kissed every inch of her face.

Then she turned to Adrian.

"What happened?"

He glanced at Lila.

"Hallway."

Outside, he told her.

Not every detail.

Enough.

Camille stared at him for several seconds.

"You're kidding."

"I wish."

"Where's Corinne?"

"With a lawyer."

Camille gave a short humorless laugh.

"That was fast."

"Camille."

"What?"

"Not now."

She folded her arms.

"No, actually. Now seems excellent."

Adrian rubbed his face.

"Don't."

"You want me not to say I never trusted her?"

"I already know."

"You didn't six hours ago."

That hurt because it was true.

Camille softened slightly.

"You love hard, Adrian."

"I know."

"No. You love optimistically. There's a difference."

He looked through the small window in the door at Lila.

"I brought someone into her life."

"Yes."

"If she's telling the truth—"

"She is."

"You don't know that."

Camille stared at him.

"Do you?"

Adrian didn't answer.

Ruiz arrived later with another detective.

She asked for permission to collect Lila's clothing and photograph her injuries.

Adrian agreed.

Then Ruiz handed him a property bag.

Inside was Pip.

"We're returning this after documenting it."

Adrian frowned.

"Why document a stuffed animal?"

Ruiz pointed at the plastic bag.

A small dark smear marked one side of Pip's fabric paw.

"That's grease."

"So?"

"The yacht's maintenance engineer says that exact marine grease is used on the bow lip."

Adrian looked at her.

Ruiz continued.

"Your daughter's toy never went over the side. Yet it has contact grease from the rim."

"How?"

"We don't know yet."

Adrian looked down at Pip.

Then remembered picking it up from beneath Corinne's lounger.

Somebody had moved it.

Somebody had handled it after Lila fell.

Ruiz said quietly, "Mr. Cole, was the toy originally under the chair when the incident occurred?"

"No."

"You're sure?"

"I saw it on the open deck when I ran outside."

"Who had access to the bow after that?"

"Everybody."

Ruiz nodded slowly.

"So someone tried to move evidence."

Adrian looked toward the hospital room.

Camille was brushing Lila's curls away from her forehead.

His phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

One message.

ASK YOUR WIFE WHY THE CAMERA WAS OFF BEFORE LILA FELL.

A second message appeared.

AND ASK HER WHAT HALCYON PROMISED HER.

Adrian stared at the screen.

The yacht incident had just stopped looking like cruelty.

May you like

Now it looked like a plan.
