Chapter 21 - The Trial Begins

The courtroom was smaller than television made courtrooms look.

Corinne entered without looking at Adrian.

He was grateful.

Sloane testified first.

No glamour remained.

She admitted disabling the bow camera.

Admitted receiving money connected to Halcyon.

Admitted the rehearsed narrative.

Admitted the planning dinner.

The defense attacked her plea agreement.

"You're here because testifying helps you, correct?"

"Yes."

"You lied to police initially?"

"Yes."

"You destroyed evidence?"

"I tried."

"You laughed while a child hung from the side of a yacht?"

Sloane's eyes dropped.

"Yes."

The defense lawyer let the silence work.

Then:

"And now we're supposed to trust you?"

Sloane answered quietly.

"No."

The attorney looked surprised.

Sloane continued.

"You're supposed to trust the messages, the logs, the photos and the recording. I wouldn't trust me either."

Adrian looked at Ruiz.

She gave nothing away.

Tessa followed.

Then Brooke.

Brooke cried before she even sat down.

The judge warned her to compose herself.

She did.

Mostly.

She described the cushion rehearsal.

Corinne saying Lila only needed enough momentum to reach the edge.

Brooke's warning.

The shove.

Lila catching the rim.

Corinne standing.

The raised shoe.

The scream.

Adrian's voice from inside.

"What happened when Mr. Cole called Lila's name?"

Brooke swallowed.

"Corinne froze."

"Why?"

"Because she thought he was farther inside."

"How do you know?"

"She told us afterward."

Adrian's hands tightened.

"What did she say?"

Brooke looked toward the jury.

"She said, 'He came back too fast.'"

The courtroom seemed to stop.

The defense objected.

The judge ruled.

The testimony remained.

Later, Nolan testified about camera logs.

Priya testified about financial flows.

A handwriting expert testified about the bow plan.

The defense argued Corinne's notes were brainstorming related to yacht photography and event staging.

Then prosecutors displayed the line:

If she catches rim, finish it.

No one moved.

Corinne finally looked at Adrian.

He didn't look away.

For the first time, he saw no wife.

No stranger either.

Just a person who had made choices.

That mattered.

Monsters were comforting because they weren't human.

Corinne was human.

Humans did terrible things.

Therefore humans had to be held accountable.

The defense's central theory was that Corinne intended only to frighten Lila and that the shove was a catastrophic miscalculation.

Then they faced the raised foot.

They argued Corinne had raised it to brace herself while leaning toward the edge.

Brooke said that was a lie.

Lila's recorded forensic interview described the shoe above her fingers.

The angle photographs supported both interpretations physically.

The jury would decide intent.

Adrian testified on the eighth day.

The prosecutor asked about the moment he heard Lila.

"I heard her call for me."

"What did you do?"

"Ran."

"What did you see?"

"My wife near the edge. Her friends nearby. My daughter's toy on the deck."

"Where was your daughter?"

"Hanging outside the hull."

His voice broke.

The prosecutor waited.

"Did Corinne immediately tell you she'd pushed Lila?"

"No."

"What did she say?"

"That Lila slipped."

"Did that match what Lila told you?"

"No."

"What did Lila say?"

Adrian looked toward the jury.

"She pointed at Corinne and said, 'She pushed me.'"

The defense rose for cross-examination.

"Mr. Cole, you were not present for the shove itself, correct?"

"Correct."

"So you didn't see it."

"No."

"You loved your daughter."

"Yes."

"You were terrified."

"Yes."

"You became angry at my client."

"Yes."

"You wanted someone to blame."

Adrian looked directly at the attorney.

"No."

The lawyer paused.

"No?"

"I wanted it to be an accident."

That changed the room.

Adrian continued.

"I wanted my daughter to be wrong. I wanted the cameras to prove she slipped. I wanted my wife to have an explanation. I wanted all of it."

His eyes moved to Corinne.

"Until the evidence stopped letting me."

May you like

No further question erased that.
