Chapter 13 - The Photographs of Lila

The photos were not family pictures.

That distinction mattered.

Lila walking from preschool to Adrian's car.

Lila at a marina.

Lila beside a swimming pool.

Lila on the aft deck of the yacht.

Lila standing near the bow.

Some images had notes.

Usually follows A when called.

Doesn't like loud water.

Carries rabbit everywhere.

C hesitates when child cries in front of A.

C.

Corinne.

A.

Adrian.

Nolan stared at the images beside him.

"This is surveillance."

"Who took them?"

"Some are from Sloane's phone. Some metadata points to Corinne's."

Adrian swallowed.

"How long?"

"Five months."

Five months.

Lila had spent five months being observed like a system vulnerability.

One photograph hurt worse than the others.

Lila asleep in Adrian's bed after a nightmare.

Corinne must have taken it from the doorway.

Below it was a note:

A becomes irrationally protective after sleep disruption.

Adrian pushed away from the table.

"I need air."

Nolan followed him outside.

Miami humidity wrapped around them.

Adrian walked to the edge of the parking structure.

"How did I not see this?"

"You weren't looking for it."

"That's not an answer."

"It's the answer."

"I married her."

"Yes."

"I let her bathe my kid."

"Adrian."

"I let her pick her up from school."

"Stop."

"I left them alone."

Nolan faced him.

"You didn't hand a child to someone you knew was dangerous."

"I should've known."

"From what?"

"Everything."

"Name one thing you knew then that clearly predicted attempted murder."

Adrian opened his mouth.

Nothing came.

Nolan continued.

"You know now. That makes the past look obvious."

Adrian stared across the city.

"My mother used to say people tell you who they are."

"Sometimes."

"And sometimes?"

"Sometimes people lie."

That was all.

No absolution.

No lecture.

Adrian appreciated him for it.

Later, Detective Ruiz showed Adrian one photo investigators believed mattered most.

It was taken on the yacht three weeks before the party.

Corinne stood beside the bow edge.

Sloane photographed her.

A measuring tape stretched from a lounger to the rim.

Adrian stared.

"One meter."

Ruiz nodded.

Exactly the distance Lila had stood from Corinne before being pushed.

"Can she explain this?"

"Her lawyer says they were measuring for furniture."

"Was new furniture ordered?"

"No."

Adrian laughed without humor.

"Of course."

Ruiz turned to another image.

Corinne leaning over the rim, photographing the metal lip.

Another.

Looking down toward the sea.

Another.

Sloane kneeling beside the camera housing.

Adrian felt sick.

"This wasn't impulsive."

"Evidence suggests planning."

"She knew Lila could catch the rim."

"We don't know what she anticipated."

"She measured it."

"Yes."

"She knew."

Ruiz didn't argue.

That evening, Lila asked for pancakes.

For dinner.

Camille said yes immediately.

Adrian said, "You can't just eat pancakes whenever you want."

Camille stared at him.

"She survived attempted murder. She can have pancakes on Tuesday."

"You can't use that forever."

"Watch me."

Lila raised both hands.

"Pancakes!"

Adrian surrendered.

While he cooked, Lila sat on the counter.

"Can Pip have one?"

"No."

"Why?"

"He's stuffed."

"He hungry."

"Then he may watch."

Lila considered this unfair.

Then she suddenly asked, "Did Corinne go jail?"

Adrian turned down the stove.

"Not yet."

"Why?"

"Because grown-ups have rules about proving things."

"She pushed."

"I know."

Lila frowned.

"That's proving."

Adrian looked at his daughter.

To her, the world was still that simple.

Someone did something.

Someone saw.

Therefore it happened.

Adults had built entire systems because it wasn't always that easy.

But sometimes, children were closer to truth than systems were.

"You're right," he said. "You know what happened."

She nodded.

Then said, "Brooke saw."

Adrian froze.

"What?"

"Brooke said no."

"When?"

"Before Corinne pushed."

He crouched.

"What did Brooke say?"

Lila thought.

"'Don't do that.'"

Adrian remembered Chapter 1 in fragments.

Brooke sitting up.

Saying Corinne's name.

Had she tried?

Barely.

Too late.

But maybe enough to show she had known something was coming.

He called Ruiz.

She listened.

Then said, "That changes Brooke's story."

"How?"

"She told us she had no idea Corinne intended to touch Lila."

Adrian stared at the dark kitchen window.

"But if she said 'don't do that' before the push..."

"Then she may have known exactly what Corinne was about to do."

Brooke wasn't just the witness who cracked.

May you like

She might have been the witness who had lied best.
