Chapter 12 - Victor Hale

Victor Hale came voluntarily.
That was his first move.
He walked into his attorney's office wearing a navy suit and the relaxed expression of a man who had spent thirty years learning that looking frightened cost money.
Detectives questioned him for three hours.
He denied everything criminal.
Halcyon had hired Corinne as a consultant before she met Adrian.
Yes.
To understand "founder psychology" and "market positioning."
Had Corinne been encouraged to begin a romantic relationship with Adrian?
Absolutely not.
Had Hale known the two were dating?
Eventually.
Had he paid her after their marriage?
Through consulting contracts, yes.
Did he know about the yacht plan?
No.
Had he ever discussed exploiting a family tragedy?
Never.
When shown the success-fee letter, Hale called it standard transaction incentive compensation.
When shown the anonymous governance packet, he denied authorizing it.
When shown the group chat, he said, "I'm not responsible for private jokes between consultants."
Ruiz later told Miriam, who told Adrian one thing:
"Hale is insulated."
Adrian expected that.
People like Hale rarely touched the match.
They built rooms where other people wanted to light one.
Two days later, Halcyon publicly suspended all negotiations involving Cole Maritime and announced an internal review.
Adrian watched the statement on television.
Camille sat beside him.
"He looks offended."
"Hale always looks offended."
"He has the face of a man whose steak came medium."
Adrian laughed.
Actually laughed.
Lila looked over from the floor.
"Daddy funny?"
"Auntie Camille is."
"I am hilarious."
Lila returned to her blocks.
For a moment, Adrian felt guilty for laughing.
Then remembered Hannah's words.
Lila needed to see that truth didn't destroy the world.
So he let himself laugh again.
That afternoon, Sloane's lawyer provided prosecutors with a recorded conversation.
Sloane had made it weeks earlier.
Insurance.
Everybody had insurance.
The recording began with restaurant noise.
Corinne's voice:
"You keep acting like he has to say yes while he's himself."
Sloane:
"And?"
Corinne:
"So don't ask him while he's himself."
Then Victor Hale.
Adrian recognized the voice immediately.
"What exactly are you proposing?"
Corinne laughed.
"Relax, Victor. I'm not proposing murder."
Hale responded, "Don't use words like that."
"I said I'm not."
Sloane asked, "Then what?"
Corinne's voice became quieter.
"Loss changes people."
Hale said nothing.
Corinne continued.
"Adrian thinks control is oxygen. Take enough away and he'll grab whatever hand promises it back."
Then Hale:
"I don't want to know details."
Corinne answered:
"Then don't."
The recording ended.
Adrian listened once.
Then again.
Miriam shut the laptop.
"Enough."
"He knew."
"He knew she was proposing destabilization."
"He knew."
"That's not identical to knowing she intended to endanger Lila."
"Stop defending him."
"I'm not defending him. I'm protecting you from making a claim you can't prove."
Adrian stood.
"He paid her."
"Yes."
"He benefited."
"Potentially."
"He told her he didn't want details."
"Which prosecutors will argue shows consciousness of risk. His lawyers will argue it shows he explicitly refused involvement."
Adrian paced.
"This is insane."
"No. It's law."
"I hate law."
"You like law when it protects your patents."
"That's different."
"It isn't."
He stopped.
Miriam softened.
"Adrian, truth is not always one clean thing."
He looked at her.
"What does that mean?"
"It means Hale may be morally responsible for creating incentives without being criminally responsible for what Corinne chose to do."
Adrian stared out the window.
He didn't like that.
But he understood it.
People wanted villains to be simple because simple villains made the world feel repairable.
Corinne wasn't simple.
Neither was Hale.
Neither was Adrian.
He had ignored things too.
Not crimes.
But signs.
Contempt disguised as humor.
Corinne mocking employees when she thought nobody important was listening.
Her obsession with who mattered.
Her constant need to rank people by power.
He had called it ambition.
Maybe because ambition looked familiar.
His phone buzzed.
Ruiz.
"We've recovered Sloane's deleted cloud backup."
Adrian closed his eyes.
"More messages?"
"Photos."
"Of what?"
A pause.
"Your daughter."
Adrian's eyes opened.
Ruiz continued.
"Taken on multiple dates before the yacht."
"What kind of photos?"
"Distances. Locations. Her routines."
His blood went cold.
May you like
"They were studying Lila."
