Chapter 9 - Richard HaleRichard arrived at Whitmore Development at 7:12 the next morning.

His access card didn't work.

Security met him in the lobby.

Daniel was waiting upstairs with Melissa.

Richard entered the conference room smiling.

"This seems dramatic."

Daniel pointed to a chair.

"Sit."

Richard remained standing.

"Am I being terminated?"

"Not yet."

"Then what's this?"

Melissa spoke.

"Pending an independent review, your access to financial systems has been temporarily suspended under the company's internal controls policy."

Richard looked at Daniel.

"You hired outside accountants."

"Yes."

"Because your wife got scared?"

Daniel's jaw tightened.

Richard knew immediately he had gone too far.

Melissa intervened.

"This conversation concerns corporate records."

Richard sat.

Daniel placed copies of seven vendor payments on the table.

"Explain these."

Richard barely looked.

"Consultants."

"For what?"

"Various projects."

"There are no work products."

"Then your project teams lost them."

"Two companies have no employees."

"Common with specialist entities."

Daniel pushed another document forward.

"One traces to Vanessa."

Richard's expression did not change.

"Ask your wife."

"I did."

That did change him.

Only slightly.

"She told me about the miscarriage."

Silence.

"She told me about the fake pregnancy."

Richard looked toward Melissa.

"She told me about the money."

Richard leaned back.

"Then I suggest everyone here gets separate counsel."

Melissa almost smiled.

"Probably the first sensible thing you've said."

Richard stood.

Daniel stopped him.

"Why did you help her?"

Richard looked at him.

"Because she asked."

"No."

Daniel's voice hardened.

"You don't help people for free."

Something old moved behind Richard's eyes.

"You sound like your father."

"Answer."

Richard walked toward the window.

"Your father understood how business works."

"My father has been dead six years."

"And his company has spent six years pretending morality is a growth strategy."

Daniel stared.

Richard turned.

"Malcolm knew there were projects that required discretion. Vendors who opened doors. Payments that didn't fit nicely into board minutes."

"You're saying my father authorized this?"

"I'm saying you inherited a machine without understanding every gear."

Melissa spoke sharply.

"Be careful."

Richard smiled.

"I am."

Daniel felt a chill.

"Do you have evidence my father approved illegal payments?"

"I didn't say illegal."

"You implied it."

"I implied history is messy."

Daniel recognized the tactic.

Shift the accusation.

Create uncertainty.

Make everyone guilty.

Richard picked up his briefcase.

"You want an audit? Have one."

He looked at Daniel.

"But before you destroy your marriage and your company to prove you're more righteous than your father, ask yourself something."

"What?"

"Why did Vanessa come to me instead of you?"

Daniel said nothing.

Richard smiled.

"That's your real problem."

He left.

Melissa waited.

"Don't react."

Daniel looked at her.

"He just threatened my father's reputation."

"He tried to."

"What if he's telling the truth?"

"Then the audit finds it."

Daniel stared at the closed door.

That afternoon the accountants found another transfer.

$1.8 million.

Different vendor.

Different state.

Same approval chain.

Richard Hale.

But attached to the payment authorization was Daniel Whitmore's electronic signature.

Daniel had never seen the document.

Melissa examined the metadata.

"Either you signed this and forgot—"

"I didn't."

"—or someone used your credentials."

Daniel thought of everyone who had access to his office.

Then he remembered something.

Months earlier, while traveling, Vanessa had asked for his authentication device.

She said Eleanor needed urgent trust documents signed.

Daniel had given her the code.

He sat back.

The theft was no longer only inside his company.

Someone had signed his name.

And his wife had been the person holding the key.
