Chapter 1 - The Boy Who PointedThe Whitmore mansion had never looked more perfect.

Hundreds of tiny lights glowed above the pool. Champagne glasses caught their reflections. A jazz quartet played beneath the covered terrace while guests moved between white linen tables and arrangements of pale roses.
At the center of almost every conversation stood Vanessa Whitmore.
Her hand rested protectively over the elegant curve beneath her emerald evening dress.
Six months pregnant, everyone had been told.
Daniel Whitmore rarely left her side.
At forty-one, Daniel carried wealth quietly. He had inherited part of Whitmore Development after his father's death, then spent the next decade proving he could run it instead of merely owning it.
Tonight, however, he wasn't discussing projects or board votes.
He was smiling whenever someone congratulated him.
Across the terrace, Tasha Brooks watched while carrying an empty tray toward the service entrance.
Her three-year-old son Caleb stood beside her.
Tasha normally never brought him to work, but his babysitter had canceled. Vanessa had reluctantly allowed him to stay, provided he remained near the staff quarters.
Caleb had escaped that arrangement within twenty minutes.
Now he clung to his mother's hand and stared at the party.
"Mommy."
Tasha continued stacking glasses.
"What, baby?"
Caleb leaned closer.
"I saw her take her belly off."
Tasha stopped.
"What?"
He pointed toward Vanessa.
"I saw her take her belly off and put it upstairs."
Tasha's stomach tightened.
"Caleb, don't say things like that."
"But I saw."
She lowered herself toward him.
"You probably saw a dress on the bed."
Caleb shook his head.
"Her belly."
Several feet away, Daniel turned.
He had heard enough.
Vanessa noticed his expression immediately.
"What is it?"
Daniel didn't answer.
He walked toward Tasha and Caleb.
Vanessa followed.
Daniel crouched until he was near Caleb's height.
"What did you say?"
Caleb instantly retreated behind his mother.
His small fingers wrapped around Tasha's hand.
Tasha stepped protectively in front of him.
"Sir, he's just talking nonsense."
Vanessa grabbed Daniel's arm.
"You're going to believe a little kid?"
Something in her tone was sharper than the question deserved.
Daniel looked at her.
Just for a second.
Then he looked back at Caleb.
"It's okay," Daniel said softly. "What did you see?"
Caleb slowly peeked around his mother's dress.
Vanessa and Daniel stood side by side.
The boy lifted his arm.
His finger pointed directly at Vanessa.
His eyes remained on Daniel.
"I saw her belly upstairs."
The music continued.
People laughed near the pool.
A waiter passed carrying champagne.
But inside that small circle, everything stopped.
Vanessa's face drained of color.
Daniel followed Caleb's finger.
First to Vanessa.
Then downward.
To the rounded stomach beneath her dress.
Then back to her face.
Vanessa's fingers tightened around his arm.
"Daniel."
He didn't answer.
He was looking at her differently now.
Not with accusation.
Not yet.
With something worse.
Suspicion.
May you like
And Vanessa knew it.
Because for the first time that evening, she removed her hand from her belly.
