Chapter 11 - Eleanor's VoteEleanor arrived furious.

Not with Vanessa.
With Daniel.
"You suspended Richard?"
"Yes."
"Without calling me?"
"I don't need your permission."
"You need the board."
"I have authority for an internal review."
Eleanor dropped her handbag onto the desk.
"Richard worked beside your father for twenty years."
"Eleven."
"Before joining formally, he advised him."
Daniel looked at her.
"You trust him that much?"
"I trusted your father."
"That's not what I asked."
Eleanor's expression changed.
Daniel placed the forensic report in front of her.
She read.
Her anger faded.
Then he told her about Vanessa.
The miscarriage.
The fake pregnancy.
Eleanor sat down.
For several seconds she said nothing.
"My grandchild?"
"There is no baby."
Eleanor's face crumpled.
Daniel immediately regretted how coldly he had said it.
She looked toward the window.
"When?"
"Four months ago."
"And she let me..."
Her voice broke.
Daniel sat beside her.
Eleanor had spent months knitting a blanket.
Discussing names.
Planning a trust.
She covered her mouth.
"She let me love a child who was gone."
Daniel said nothing.
After several minutes Eleanor wiped her eyes.
"What does this have to do with Richard?"
"More than we know."
Daniel explained the suspended audit.
The vendors.
The forged signature.
Eleanor stared at him.
Then something changed.
"Oh, God."
"What?"
She stood.
"Three months ago, I was going to vote for an external audit."
Daniel remembered.
The board had been split.
Eleanor's shares controlled enough votes to matter.
"What happened?"
"Vanessa came to me."
Daniel felt cold.
"What did she say?"
"That the stress was affecting the pregnancy."
Daniel closed his eyes.
"She asked me not to make you fight with Richard while she was carrying the baby."
"So you voted against it."
Eleanor nodded.
"I thought I was protecting her."
Daniel laughed bitterly.
"She used the baby to control a board vote."
Eleanor looked hurt.
"Don't."
"What?"
"Do not make her grief simple because you're angry."
Daniel stared at his mother.
"She committed fraud."
"Yes."
"She lied about our child."
"Yes."
"And you're defending her?"
"I'm saying both things can be true."
Eleanor's voice hardened.
"She can be grieving and guilty."
Daniel looked away.
"Your father made the same mistake you're making now."
"What mistake?"
"Believing understanding someone means excusing them."
She picked up the report.
"You need to understand Vanessa if you want to understand what happened."
Daniel said nothing.
Eleanor opened the first payment schedule.
Then frowned.
"What?"
She pointed.
"This company."
Daniel looked.
Harbor Ridge Advisory LLC.
"Do you recognize it?"
Eleanor nodded slowly.
"Your father used that name."
Daniel stared at her.
"For what?"
"I don't know."
"Mother."
"I don't."
"When?"
"Years ago. He kept files labeled Harbor Ridge in his private office."
"Why didn't you say this before?"
"Because I hadn't seen the name in years."
Daniel's pulse quickened.
Richard's words returned.
You inherited a machine without understanding every gear.
Daniel called Melissa.
"Expand the review."
"To what?"
"Before my father's death."
"How far?"
"Ten years."
Eleanor watched him.
Daniel added, "And find every transaction involving Harbor Ridge."
That evening, the auditors found the first old payment.
It was dated eight years earlier.
Long before Vanessa's secret investment.
Long before her miscarriage.
Long before Daniel became CEO.
Approved by Malcolm Whitmore.
