Chapter 18 - The BoardroomThe emergency board meeting lasted six hours.

Richard attended remotely with counsel.

Vanessa did not attend.

Daniel presented the forensic findings.

Melissa presented the legal risks.

Independent accountants explained how the vendor scheme worked.

Then Eleanor placed Malcolm's blue ledgers on the table.

Richard's attorney objected immediately.

"These documents have not been authenticated."

Melissa replied, "Authentication can occur in the appropriate proceedings. Today the board is considering internal governance."

Richard appeared on the screen.

"Daniel, you're destroying your father's company."

Daniel looked at him.

"No."

"You think these people respect you?"

Richard gestured toward the board.

"They respected Malcolm."

"My father suspected you."

"Your father was paranoid."

"He wrote that you were using Harbor Ridge improperly."

"A handwritten note isn't evidence."

"No."

Daniel leaned forward.

"The bank records are."

Silence.

Daniel continued.

"And the metadata."

Richard's expression changed.

The forensic team had recovered archived server logs.

They showed Richard personally creating several vendor profiles.

Approving payments.

Changing contact information.

And accessing Daniel's electronic signature credentials during times Daniel was not logged into the corporate network.

Richard tried one final strategy.

"Vanessa had access."

Daniel answered, "She did."

"Then ask her."

"We did."

"And you believe your wife?"

"No."

That surprised everyone.

Daniel continued.

"I believe evidence."

Richard had spent years exploiting personal loyalty.

Daniel refused to offer him another opening.

The board voted.

Richard Hale was terminated for cause, subject to contractual and legal review.

His access was revoked permanently.

The company authorized civil action seeking recovery of diverted funds.

Counsel also approved referral of evidence to appropriate authorities.

There was no applause.

No victory.

Just signatures.

Afterward Daniel remained alone in the boardroom.

Eleanor returned.

"It's done."

"No."

Daniel looked at the empty screen.

"It's beginning."

She understood.

Investigations could take months.

Litigation longer.

Money might never be fully recovered.

Vanessa still faced consequences.

The marriage was still broken.

Eleanor sat beside him.

"Your father would be proud."

Daniel looked at her.

"Would he?"

"Eventually."

Daniel smiled faintly.

Then Melissa entered carrying another folder.

"Before you relax."

"I wasn't."

"Good."

She placed the folder down.

"The investigators reviewing the records want to interview Vanessa formally."

Daniel nodded.

"Expected."

"And you."

"Fine."

"And possibly Tasha regarding Richard's attempt to influence her."

Daniel's expression hardened.

"I promised Caleb would stay out."

"Tasha can describe the conversation without making Caleb participate."

"Make sure of it."

Melissa nodded.

Then hesitated.

"There's something else."

Daniel waited.

"We traced one more account."

"Richard?"

"No."

"Vanessa?"

Melissa sat.

"Your father."

Daniel's stomach tightened.

"What?"

"The account wasn't theft."

"Then what?"

"Malcolm created a separate reserve six years before he died."

"For what?"

Melissa handed him the document.

The beneficiary designation read:

Employee Education and Emergency Trust.

Daniel stared.

"Why have I never heard of this?"

"Because it was never funded properly after his death."

Eleanor looked shocked.

Melissa continued.

"The initial trustee resigned. Administration stalled. The account still exists."

Daniel turned pages.

Malcolm had intended part of several project profits to support long-term household and company employees.

But after he died, paperwork had been buried inside estate disputes.

Daniel looked at Eleanor.

"We forgot it."

She looked devastated.

"Apparently."

One name appeared among the first intended beneficiaries.

Lillian Brooks.

Tasha's mother.

Daniel closed the folder.

His family had spent years talking about inheritance.

Meanwhile, one of Malcolm's final promises to the people who helped build their lives had simply been abandoned.

The fraud investigation had uncovered a theft.

May you like

It had also uncovered a debt.

And Daniel knew which one he could actually repay.
