Chapter 16 - The CounterattackRichard Hale did not disappear quietly.

His attorneys sent letters to every board member.

He accused Daniel of conducting a personal vendetta after discovering his wife's financial misconduct.

He claimed Daniel was using corporate resources to cover a marital scandal.

Then he filed a civil complaint alleging wrongful suspension and reputational harm.

Within hours, business reporters called.

The fake pregnancy had not leaked.

Yet.

Melissa gathered the family.

"This is pressure."

Eleanor asked, "Can we stop publication?"

"Not if the information is lawfully obtained and newsworthy."

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

"Richard will release it."

She nodded.

"Yes."

"When?"

"When it helps him most."

Daniel hated that.

Not because of public embarrassment.

Because the story would include Caleb.

"A three-year-old boy exposed it," he said.

Tasha, sitting at the far end of the table, stiffened.

"No."

Everyone looked at her.

"My son does not become part of some newspaper circus."

Melissa nodded.

"We can request that reporters withhold a minor's identity."

"Request?"

"Yes."

Tasha laughed bitterly.

"That's comforting."

Daniel spoke.

"If it leaks, we'll state only that a private family matter led to questions. We won't identify Caleb."

"And if Richard does?"

Daniel's expression hardened.

"Then we'll protect him legally as far as we can."

Tasha stood.

"I should have never brought him to that party."

Daniel looked at her.

"No."

She stopped.

"This is not because you brought him."

"He saw something."

"Because Vanessa was lying."

Vanessa lowered her eyes.

Daniel continued.

"And Richard was stealing."

Tasha looked exhausted.

"That doesn't stop people from coming after the easiest person."

She left.

That night Richard made his move.

An entertainment site published photographs of Vanessa without the prosthetic.

The headline was brutal.

BILLIONAIRE HEIR'S WIFE FAKED PREGNANCY FOR MONTHS.

The article claimed "a domestic employee's child" had exposed her.

No name.

But enough details that local reporters began calling the mansion.

Daniel shut the gates.

Vanessa watched coverage in silence.

She did not cry.

"This is what I was afraid of," she said.

Daniel looked at her.

"Public humiliation?"

"Becoming a story instead of a person."

He almost said she had created the story.

Instead he turned off the television.

The next morning another article appeared.

This one described Vanessa as the mastermind of a multimillion-dollar corporate fraud.

Richard was portrayed as the executive who had discovered irregularities.

Melissa nearly threw her tablet.

"He's reversing everything."

Daniel asked, "Can he make it stick?"

"Not if the records are as strong as we think."

The forensic report arrived that afternoon.

Total questionable transactions:

$8.7 million.

Payments linked directly to Vanessa-controlled entities:

$1.2 million.

Personal benefit traced to Vanessa:

approximately $410,000.

Payments controlled through Richard-linked entities:

more than $6.9 million.

Daniel stared at the numbers.

Vanessa had committed serious fraud.

But she had not designed the entire scheme.

Richard had.

The report contained something even worse for him.

After Daniel suspended the audit months earlier, Richard accelerated payments.

He had transferred nearly $3 million in eight weeks.

The fake pregnancy had not merely protected Vanessa.

It had given Richard time.

Daniel looked at Melissa.

"What now?"

"We refer the evidence."

"To whom?"

"Your board first. Then law enforcement depending on counsel's review."

"No dramatic arrest?"

Melissa gave him a tired look.

"Real life is slower."

Daniel almost smiled.

Then his phone rang.

Tasha.

He answered immediately.

Her voice shook.

"Someone followed me from Caleb's daycare."

Daniel stood.

"Where are you?"

"Police station."

"Is Caleb with you?"

"Yes."

"Are you safe?"

"Yes."

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

She knew.

Without hearing another word, she knew.

Richard had stopped fighting only for money.

Now he was fighting because he was afraid.
