Chapter 8 - The Search

Three days passed.

No one told the families whether police had sought a warrant.

That was normal.

Hailey hated normal.

She checked the news constantly.

Nothing.

Mrs. Brennan’s house remained quiet.

Then, Thursday morning, two unmarked vehicles arrived outside the property.

David learned from Rachel only after local reporters noticed.

State investigators and local detectives executed a search warrant.

Nobody from the Morgan family went near the house.

David insisted on that.

“This is not revenge tourism.”

Hailey rolled her eyes at the phrase.

But she understood.

By evening, reporters knew several boxes and electronic devices had been removed.

Rachel cautioned them.

“A search warrant means a judge found probable cause for the search. It does not mean guilt has been proven.”

David nodded.

Hailey was less patient.

“What did they find?”

“We don’t know.”

They found out indirectly.

Mrs. Brennan’s attorney released a statement accusing the district of scapegoating an accomplished teacher.

Principal Ward’s attorney issued a separate statement.

Then Northstar Achievement Group suspended Martin Keane.

People did not usually suspend executives because nothing had happened.

Two days later, investigators interviewed David.

They asked about the school’s military partnership.

Donations.

Events.

Whether anyone had asked him for favors.

No.

Whether Ward ever discussed school rankings with him.

Frequently.

Whether she mentioned grants.

Yes.

At every community event.

David remembered something.

A year earlier, Ward joked that high scores “kept the lights on.”

At the time everyone laughed.

Now it sounded different.

The investigators showed him an email recovered during the search.

Mrs. Brennan to Martin Keane:

Ward needs three points this cycle. I can move Morgan, Reed, Patterson and two others if I get Set C.

David felt cold.

“Move?”

The investigator did not interpret it.

Another email supplied context.

Keane replied:

Set C attached. Do not forward. Destroy print copies after use.

The restricted assessment package.

Rachel later explained that prosecutors now had direct evidence showing a private consultant provided protected test material to a teacher.

Still, they needed to prove who knew.

Then investigators recovered a handwritten notebook from Mrs. Brennan’s cabinet.

Student names.

Scores.

Family information.

Notes.

Beside Hailey:

Military father. Reputation sensitive. Leverage placement discrepancy if necessary.

Hailey read the line once.

Then pushed the copy away.

David wanted to tear the page apart.

Rachel stopped him.

“Evidence.”

He released it.

Beside Sophia:

Mother recently divorced. Needs scholarship.

Beside Marcus:

Mother district employee. Audit pressure.

Beside Tiana:

Defiant. Family financially weak. Push transfer if needed.

Mrs. Brennan had cataloged children’s vulnerabilities.

Not academic weaknesses.

Family weaknesses.

That was what shattered Hailey most.

“She studied us.”

David nodded.

“She studied what she thought she could use.”

Hailey stared at the notebook.

Then she saw another notation.

H.M. witnessed Ward/Keane conversation? Monitor.

She looked up.

“What conversation?”

David leaned closer.

The date was October 3.

Hailey remembered.

A school fundraiser.

She had gone back inside for her backpack.

Near Principal Ward’s office, she heard voices.

Ward and a man arguing about “numbers.”

At thirteen, she had not cared.

Later Mrs. Brennan began paying unusual attention to her.

Maybe the placement-score threat had not started because Hailey noticed the benchmark questions.

Maybe Mrs. Brennan believed Hailey had overheard something more damaging.

“What did they say?” David asked.

Hailey closed her eyes.

Fragments came back.

“We cannot do this again.”

“Then enjoy explaining the drop.”

“Patricia has it handled.”

Patricia.

Mrs. Brennan.

Hailey opened her eyes.

“I heard Ward say Mrs. Brennan had something handled.”

Rachel wrote everything down.

Suddenly the timeline became clear.

October: Hailey overheard Ward and Keane.

November: Mrs. Brennan began watching her.

December: Mrs. Brennan showed her manipulated placement records.

January: humiliations escalated.

Then February:

The ruler.

The kneeling.

The paper.

David looked at the copied notebook.

What had seemed like a teacher losing control was beginning to look more deliberate.

Mrs. Brennan had wanted obedience.

And perhaps she had wanted Hailey frightened enough that she would never repeat what she heard.

But she made one mistake.

May you like

She performed the humiliation in a room full of children.

And one of those children pressed Record.
