Chapter 1 - Eat It

The wooden ruler came down toward Hailey Morgan’s outstretched hand.
Crack.
Pain flashed through her fingers.
Twenty-six students went silent.
Thirteen-year-old Hailey remained on her knees at the front of the classroom, facing Mrs. Brennan.
One hand trembled in front of her.
The other held a crumpled sheet of paper.
Tears ran down Hailey’s cheeks.
Mrs. Brennan stood directly over her.
“Eat it! Faster!”
Hailey looked up.
“I’m sorry… I won’t fall asleep in class again.”
A few students lowered their eyes.
Nobody moved.
Nobody challenged the teacher.
Mrs. Brennan had spent years teaching them exactly what happened to students who challenged her.
She leaned toward Hailey.
“Either you eat it… or your next exam grade…”
She stopped.
The threat did not need an ending.
Hailey understood.
Mrs. Brennan controlled the gradebook.
She controlled recommendations.
She controlled who entered the school’s honors track the following year.
And Hailey had spent three years trying to remain the student her father believed she was.
Colonel David Morgan’s daughter did not fail classes.
She did not complain.
She did not make excuses.
At least that was what Hailey had taught herself to believe.
Mrs. Brennan’s mouth curved into a small smile.
Hailey raised the crumpled paper.
Her stomach tightened.
She bit a small piece from the corner.
The room blurred through her tears as she chewed.
Behind Mrs. Brennan, Sophia Reed stared in horror.
Sophia had seen the teacher humiliate students before.
She had seen detention used for petty offenses.
She had heard Mrs. Brennan threaten grades.
But this was different.
Sophia slowly reached for her phone.
Mrs. Brennan’s back remained toward her.
Sophia kept the phone low.
Record.
On the screen, Hailey was still kneeling.
Still crying.
Still chewing.
The ruler remained in Mrs. Brennan’s hand.
Sophia’s thumb trembled.
She recorded several seconds.
Then she stopped.
Saved.
She opened a contact.
COLONEL DAVID MORGAN.
Hailey had given Sophia the number months earlier during a field trip.
“If anything happens and you can’t reach me, call my dad.”
Sophia attached the video.
For two seconds, she hesitated.
Sending it could get her suspended.
Mrs. Brennan had already warned students about recording inside class.
Then Hailey raised the paper again.
Sophia pressed SEND.
Twenty-two miles away, Colonel David Morgan sat behind a wide desk inside a military command office.
Operational maps covered the wall.
Two officers stood near a briefing board.
David was reviewing a logistics report when his phone vibrated.
He almost ignored it.
Then he saw Sophia’s name.
A video attachment.
He opened it.
At first, he did not understand what he was seeing.
A classroom.
Mrs. Brennan.
Someone on the floor.
Then the girl lifted her face.
David stopped breathing.
Hailey.
His daughter was kneeling.
Crying.
Mrs. Brennan was standing over her with a ruler.
David watched Hailey bite the paper.
His expression changed.
Confusion disappeared.
Shock replaced it.
Then disbelief.
Then something much colder.
He replayed the video.
Mrs. Brennan’s voice came from the phone.
“Either you eat it… or your next exam grade…”
David’s jaw clenched.
The officers near the briefing board noticed.
“Sir?”
David did not answer.
He replayed the beginning.
The ruler moved.
Hailey flinched.
The colonel’s open palm slammed against his desk.
BANG.
Every person in the office stopped.
David stared at the screen.
One thought pushed through everything else.
Hailey had never told him.
Not once.
He immediately called her school.
The main office answered.
“This is Colonel David Morgan. I’m Hailey Morgan’s father. Put me through to the principal.”
A pause.
“Is this an emergency?”
David looked at the frozen image of his daughter kneeling.
“Yes.”
The principal came on less than a minute later.
“Colonel Morgan, this is Principal Evelyn Ward.”
“My daughter is on her knees in a classroom being forced to put paper in her mouth.”
Silence.
Then:
“I’m sorry?”
“I have video.”
Another pause.
Longer this time.
David noticed it.
“I’m sure there is context—”
“Context?”
“Mrs. Brennan is one of our most experienced teachers.”
David stood.
“Get my daughter out of that room.”
“Colonel—”
“Now.”
His voice remained controlled.
That made it more frightening.
Principal Ward said she would investigate immediately.
David ended the call.
One of his officers approached.
“Sir, do you need someone to drive?”
David picked up his jacket.
He almost said yes.
Then he stopped.
Anger was driving him too hard.
He handed his keys over.
“You drive.”
Twenty minutes later, Hailey sat inside the counselor’s office.
Mrs. Brennan had been told to remain in her classroom.
Principal Ward sat opposite Hailey.
“What happened?”
Hailey looked at the floor.
“I fell asleep.”
“That isn’t what I asked.”
Hailey rubbed her fingers.
Mrs. Brennan had said something before Hailey was removed.
Something quiet enough that nobody else heard.
You know what happens if your father makes trouble.
Principal Ward repeated, “Hailey?”
The girl looked up.
“Nothing happened.”
The principal studied her.
“You understand there is a video.”
Hailey’s face changed.
“What video?”
“Sophia recorded the incident.”
For the first time, genuine panic appeared in Hailey’s eyes.
Not because Mrs. Brennan had been exposed.
Because Hailey knew something Principal Ward did not.
Mrs. Brennan had not threatened only Hailey’s grade.
For three months, she had been keeping something else over the girl.
Something connected to David.
And if her father came to the school angry enough to start asking questions, Hailey believed Mrs. Brennan would use it.
The office door opened.
David Morgan entered.
Hailey stood.
“Dad—”
He crossed the room and stopped in front of her.
His anger disappeared the instant he saw her face.
“Are you hurt?”
Hailey shook her head.
David looked at her hand.
Then at the tear stains beneath her eyes.
“Tell me what happened.”
Hailey opened her mouth.
Mrs. Brennan’s warning echoed inside her head.
Your father’s career can survive many things, Hailey. But not everything.
Hailey looked directly at David.
Then she lied.
“It was my fault.”
David stared at his daughter.
And Principal Ward quietly looked away.
May you like
That was the first moment David understood that the video was only the beginning.
Someone had frightened Hailey badly enough to protect the person who had humiliated her.
