Chapter 18 - Marcus Tells the Truth

Marcus Bell had spent months calling himself a cheater.

Hailey hated hearing it.

“You were pressured.”

“I still did it.”

Both could be true.

Marcus decided to address the school’s academic committee.

He admitted using advance material on two tests.

He explained Brennan’s threat involving his mother.

He did not ask for his old scores to remain.

“Delete them.”

His mother cried.

Marcus requested a chance to retest honestly.

The district agreed.

He scored lower.

Much lower.

He stared at the result.

Seventy-eighth percentile.

His previous score had been ninety-seven.

Marcus laughed.

“My life is over.”

Hailey sat beside him.

“No.”

“I’m not advanced.”

“Maybe not.”

“You are terrible at comforting people.”

“I’ve been told.”

Marcus switched to standard mathematics.

A month later he told Hailey:

“I actually understand class now.”

For years, adults had pushed him into an identity he could not maintain without cheating.

The lower placement felt like failure.

Then it became relief.

Eli also retested.

Sophia refused to participate in any advanced testing until the following semester.

Hailey remained on her provisional plan and earned her place through coursework.

The school stopped publishing student performance rankings on hallway displays.

Small policy.

Huge emotional difference.

Numbers slowly returned to being information.

Not identity.
