Chapter 14 - The Mother Who Defended Brennan

A woman named Claire Dawson requested a meeting.
Her daughter, Lily, had studied under Mrs. Brennan for two years.
Claire had publicly defended the teacher.
Now she sat across from Hailey looking ashamed.
“I owe you an apology.”
Hailey did not answer.
Claire explained.
Lily received perfect benchmark scores.
She earned a competitive academic scholarship.
When the scandal broke, Claire attacked Sophia online.
She accused Hailey’s family of destroying a teacher over “one strict punishment.”
Then investigators contacted Lily.
The girl admitted Brennan had provided restricted questions.
Claire started crying.
“I didn't know.”
Hailey asked:
“Did Lily?”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t she tell you?”
Claire looked shattered.
“Because she thought I would be disappointed.”
Hailey understood that immediately.
Claire continued.
“I cared so much about her being exceptional that she thought honesty would make me love her less.”
David looked away.
The sentence hit both parents.
Claire apologized to Sophia privately as well.
Then she did something harder.
She publicly corrected herself.
She posted:
I defended Mrs. Brennan because my daughter benefited from the same system that harmed other children. I mistook advantage for fairness. I was wrong.
The post changed the public conversation.
Not everyone who supported Brennan was cruel.
Some had simply benefited.
That was harder to confront.
The district began auditing scholarships and academic placements.
Students panicked.
Hailey spoke at a student meeting.
“Don’t punish kids for what adults gave them.”
Interim Principal Hayes agreed.
Scores could be retested.
Programs could be reviewed.
But no child would automatically lose opportunities because adults manipulated systems without the child’s informed participation.
Marcus cried when he heard.
Eli did too.
For the first time, the children stopped dividing into victims and cheaters.
Most of them had been both manipulated and used differently.

Mrs. Brennan’s power had depended on keeping them isolated.
Once they compared stories, her system collapsed.
