Chapter 22 - The Money Comes Back

The district pursued repayment from Northstar for portions of contracts tied to misrepresented services.

Civil litigation followed.

Northstar dissolved months later.

A settlement returned hundreds of thousands of dollars to the district without an admission covering every allegation.

The board voted to place recovered funds into student mental-health services, independent testing oversight and whistleblower protections.

Some parents wanted the money distributed directly.

Others wanted litigation to continue.

No decision satisfied everyone.

Hailey attended the board meeting.

One member asked if she wanted to speak.

She declined.

For once, she did not need to turn pain into a public performance.

David respected that.

Outside, a reporter approached.

“Hailey, do you feel like you won?”

She thought.

Then answered:

“I think we stopped something.”

“That isn’t the same?”

May you like

“No.”

She walked away.
