Chapter 7 - Mrs. Ramirez’s Other MemoryWhile on leave, Mrs. Ramirez remembered another detail.

Mrs. Holloway sometimes asked her to throw away children’s gifts.

Not teacher gifts.

Children’s artwork.

“Why?”

“Too much clutter.”

Normal enough.

Then Mrs. Ramirez remembered which artwork.

Mostly handmade teacher cards from families Mrs. Holloway disliked.

She once heard Mrs. Holloway say:

“If the parents can’t make an effort, I don’t need construction paper trash.”

Mrs. Ramirez had felt uncomfortable.

She said nothing.

Now guilt consumed her.

Daniel told her:

“You didn’t know where this was going.”

“I knew she was cruel.”

“Yes.”

“I stayed quiet.”

Daniel understood that feeling.

Ella had told him months earlier:

“Mrs. Holloway likes presents more than pictures.”

Daniel laughed at the time.

He thought it was a child’s funny observation.

He had missed something too.

That became Daniel’s self-accountability arc.

He remembered other clues.

Ella did not want to wear her homemade bracelet to school because:

“Mrs. Holloway says homemade things are messy.”

Ella once asked:

“Are we poor?”

Daniel had laughed.

“No.”

He never asked why.

Now he knew.

Mrs. Holloway talked about parents’ jobs.

Cars.

Vacations.

Gifts.

Children absorbed status before they understood money.

Daniel had been busy enough to dismiss odd comments as preschool nonsense.

He did not blame himself for Mrs. Holloway.

He did change how he listened.
