Chapter 6 - Mrs. Holloway Fights BackMrs. Holloway denied being prejudiced against poorer families.

She denied punishing children over gifts.

She denied intentionally putting Ella’s hair into the porridge.

Her attorney released a statement:

The haircut incident has been dramatically mischaracterized. Mrs. Holloway attempted to remove a tangled section of hair during a classroom accident. Loose strands unfortunately fell into a breakfast bowl.

Daniel nearly laughed.

Then the video audio was enhanced.

Mrs. Holloway’s voice:

“It’s Teacher Appreciation Week.”

“Your family brought me nothing.”

“So eat it.”

The accident defense collapsed.

Mrs. Holloway changed strategy.

She claimed severe burnout.

Low pay.

Stress.

Unreasonable parents.

Years of feeling disrespected.

Some teachers sympathized.

Daniel did too, in one narrow way.

Teachers were underpaid.

Preschool staff were exhausted.

Parents could be demanding.

None of those things placed scissors in Ella’s hair.

Explanation was not absolution.

Mrs. Holloway then attacked Mrs. Ramirez.

The custodian had violated employee policy by recording children.

The union demanded discipline.

Parents became angry.

The school placed Mrs. Ramirez on temporary administrative leave while lawyers reviewed privacy issues.

She called Daniel crying.

“I’m going to lose my job.”

“You did the right thing.”

“That doesn’t mean they’ll care.”

Daniel contacted an employment attorney for her.

At his expense.

Mrs. Ramirez protested.

“No.”

“You protected my daughter.”

“I did what anyone should do.”

“No.”

Daniel’s voice softened.

“You did what everyone should do. That’s different.”

The public learned about the case after a licensing report became accessible.

No child’s full video was released.

Still, the story spread.

A five-year-old.

Teacher Appreciation Week.

Hair in porridge.

Parents were furious.

Mrs. Holloway’s name became public.

Her attorney accused Daniel of orchestrating media pressure.

Daniel had not.

He refused interviews.

Ella would not become content for strangers.

That boundary protected her.
