Chapter 22 - Mrs. Holloway’s Empty ShelfMrs. Holloway moved into a small apartment across town.

During the civil case, boxes from her classroom were returned.

One contained old gifts.

Mugs.

Candles.

Thank-you cards.

The expensive handbag.

A framed photograph of her old class.

She sat on the floor.

For years, she had measured value through these objects.

Now they looked like evidence of how badly she misunderstood gratitude.

She opened a handmade card from a child years earlier.

Crayon letters.

I LOVE WHEN YOU READ BEAR BOOK.

No gift card.

No money.

Only a child remembering a good moment.

Mrs. Holloway cried.

It did not earn forgiveness.

It did not restore her license.

It did not remove Ella’s fear.

Understanding after consequence was still better than never understanding.

May you like

But it was hers to carry.

Not Ella’s.
