Chapter 8 - Celeste’s SecretCeleste didn't deny being in Peter Lang’s car.

But her explanation complicated everything.

“I was investigating him.”

Daniel didn't believe her.

She handed Rachel her phone.

Months of messages showed Celeste had suspected Lang was diverting Cross Meridian resources into Harbor Ridge.

She followed him.

That led her to Lorraine.

“Why didn't you tell us immediately?” Maya asked.

“Because my mother didn't know I was investigating her CFO.”

Evelyn had built Cross Meridian through relentless control.

Celeste feared accusing Lang without proof would destroy her position inside the company.

Daniel understood fear of a powerful parent.

He still didn't trust her.

Celeste showed them something else.

A recording from Peter Lang.

In it, Lang told Lorraine:

“Daniel must be legally separated before his birthday.”

Lorraine replied:

“I can handle Maya.”

“And the child?”

Silence.

Then Lorraine said:

“Nia goes wherever Maya goes.”

Daniel had to leave the room.

Maya remained seated.

Her face was almost expressionless.

Rachel stopped the recording.

“You don't need to hear more tonight.”

“Yes, I do.”

Maya listened to the entire file.

Lorraine and Lang discussed pressuring Maya financially, socially and professionally.

There was no explicit plan to physically harm her.

Their strategy was different.

Destroy the marriage.

Make Maya believe Daniel was secretly meeting Celeste.

Make Daniel believe Maya wanted access to his inheritance.

Create enough mistrust that divorce became inevitable.

The photograph in Nia’s backpack was part of an escalation.

But something had gone wrong.

Lorraine became impatient.

She confronted Nia herself.

Daniel returned.

“Why the frying pan?”

Nobody answered.

Because there was no financial strategy that explained cruelty toward a six-year-old.

That belonged to Lorraine alone.

Rachel said quietly, “Money can explain the timing. It doesn't excuse the abuse.”

Daniel nodded.

The distinction mattered.

That evening, Maya finally told him something she had hidden.

“Lorraine offered me money.”

Daniel stared.

“When?”

“Two years ago.”

“How much?”

“Five hundred thousand dollars.”

“For what?”

“To leave you.”

Daniel felt betrayed.

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because I refused, and I thought telling you would force you to choose between us.”

“She already made me choose.”

“I know that now.”

Maya's eyes filled.

“I was trying to protect your relationship with your mother.”

Daniel sat beside her.

For months Lorraine had weaponized silence.

His silence.

Maya’s silence.

Thomas’s silence.

Celeste’s silence.

Everyone had tried to avoid conflict.

Lorraine had used that avoidance as cover.

The following morning, Samuel called.

He had located the source of the anonymous email containing Daniel’s forged signature.

Daniel expected Celeste.

Or Thomas.

He was wrong.

The email originated from an account created using credentials associated with Richard Mercer.

Someone had accessed Richard’s dormant digital records three days earlier.

Daniel asked the obvious question.

“Who still had his passwords?”

Samuel answered:

“Your mother.”

But Lorraine had no reason to expose herself.

May you like

Which meant someone else had gotten into Richard’s files.

Someone who wanted Daniel to discover the truth.
