Chapter 1 - The Sound Behind the FenceMark Ellison had lived beside Daniel Mercer for seven years, long enough to recognize the ordinary sounds of the Mercer backyard.

The sprinkler clicked every morning. Wind rattled the privacy fence. Six-year-old Nia sometimes laughed beneath the enormous maple tree while her mother watched from the patio.
That Thursday afternoon, Mark heard something different.
A child crying.
Then—
THUD.
Mark stopped beside his lawn mower.
THUD. THUD.
“Grandma… please stop!”
Mark’s blood ran cold.
He moved toward the wooden fence and looked through a narrow gap.
Nia stood beneath the maple tree. Her pale-yellow dress was wrinkled. Her wrists had been loosely secured with a rope around a low branch, although both sneakers remained firmly on the grass.
Beside her stood Lorraine Mercer.
Daniel’s sixty-three-year-old mother wore expensive jewelry and a burgundy blouse. In one hand she held a black frying pan.
“You and your mother are leaving,” Lorraine said.
Nia sobbed.
Lorraine pointed the pan toward her.
“My son will marry someone better.”
She paused.
“A wealthy woman.”
“Please… don’t make Mommy leave.”
Lorraine swung again.
The pan struck the side of Nia’s dress with another sickening sound.
Mark pulled out his phone.
His hands shook as he recorded through the fence.
He captured everything—the rope, Lorraine, the pan, Nia’s tears.
Most importantly, he captured Lorraine’s words.
Mark sent the video directly to Daniel.
Then he called him.
Daniel answered from his downtown office.
“Mark?”
“Come home. Now.”
“What happened?”
“Just watch what I sent you.”
Thirty seconds later, Mark heard Daniel breathing through the phone.
“What the hell am I looking at?”
“Your backyard.”
Silence.
Then Lorraine’s voice played faintly through Daniel’s phone.
Your mother is finished here.
Daniel disconnected.
Mark remained at the fence until the Mercer back door suddenly flew open twelve minutes later.
Daniel stormed outside, still wearing his white office shirt.
Lorraine turned.
Daniel saw Nia.
Saw the rope.
Saw the pan.
His face changed.
“What are you doing to my daughter?!”
Lorraine lowered the frying pan.
“Daniel, listen—”
“Step away from her.”
Nia looked up.
“Daddy.”
Daniel crossed the lawn and untied her.
Nia collapsed against him.
Lorraine stared at them with astonishing calm.
“She has poisoned this family.”
Daniel lifted his head.
“She’s six.”
“I’m talking about her mother.”
Daniel carried Nia toward the house.
Lorraine followed.
“You don't understand what she's costing you.”
Daniel stopped.
“What does that mean?”
Lorraine’s eyes flicked toward Mark’s fence.
She finally realized someone had witnessed everything.
Her confidence disappeared.
Daniel noticed.
That frightened him almost as much as what he had just seen.
Because Lorraine wasn’t looking like a grandmother who had lost control.
She looked like someone whose plan had been discovered too early.
And that night, after Nia finally fell asleep beside her mother, Daniel received an email from an unknown address.
There was no message.
Only one attachment.
A scanned document bearing Daniel’s signature.
Except Daniel had never signed it.
At the top were five words:
MERCER FAMILY ASSET TRANSFER AGREEMENT.

And beneath his forged signature was an amount:
$8,400,000.
