Chapter 11 - Lorraine’s VersionDaniel did not go alone.

Rachel arranged for Samuel to remain nearby, and Daniel recorded the conversation where legally permissible.
Lorraine waited on the cabin porch.
“You brought people.”
“They're not inside.”
Lorraine laughed bitterly.
“You've become suspicious.”
“I wonder why.”
Inside, she produced financial statements.
Some were genuine.
Richard had approved the original Harbor Ridge investment.
Lorraine had told the truth about that.
But only about the beginning.
Richard invested $1.2 million.
When the project began failing, he refused additional funding.
Lorraine secretly doubled down.
“You were trying to save his investment,” Daniel said.
“Our investment.”
“You forged him.”
“I protected this family.”
“You stole from it.”
Lorraine slammed her hand against the table.
“Everything I did was because Richard became weak.”
Daniel stared.
“He started caring about feelings instead of legacy.”
“You mean Maya.”
“I mean you.”
Lorraine's eyes filled—not with remorse, but fury.
“You were supposed to inherit something enormous.”
“I still might.”
“Not anymore.”
She explained that Richard’s trust divided future control among Daniel and Daniel’s descendants.
Nia’s inclusion prevented Lorraine from consolidating certain voting rights.
“If you had married appropriately—”
Daniel stood.
“Don't.”
“You asked.”
“No. I asked about money. You keep turning my wife and daughter into financial instruments.”
Lorraine’s face hardened.
“Because that is what families like ours understand.”
“Not mine.”
Lorraine flinched.
Daniel continued.
“Maya is my family. Nia is my family.”
“And I'm what?”
Daniel looked at her.
“My mother.”
For a moment she seemed vulnerable.
Then Daniel added:
“But that doesn't give you ownership of me.”
Lorraine slid a document across the table.
Richard had prepared a contingency plan.
If Harbor Ridge losses threatened the trust, certain assets could be liquidated before Daniel’s control date.
Lorraine had authority to initiate that process.
“But only with independent trustee approval,” Daniel said.
Lorraine smiled.
“Exactly.”
“Who?”
She didn't answer.
Daniel understood.
Gregory Vale wasn't merely her attorney.
He was the independent trustee.
That explained everything.
Vale could approve transfers.
Lang could move money.
Lorraine could direct strategy.
Three people.
One system.
Daniel took the document.
Lorraine grabbed it.
“You can't.”
“It's evidence.”
“It's mine.”
Daniel looked at her.
“Then keep it.”
He had already photographed it.
Lorraine realized.
Her expression changed.
Daniel walked outside.
“Daniel!”
He turned.
For the first time, Lorraine looked frightened.
“If you expose Harbor Ridge, people will lose everything.”
“Which people?”
She said nothing.
Daniel walked away.
Then Lorraine called after him.
“Ask Evelyn Cross where the missing two million went.”
Daniel stopped.
He turned slowly.
May you like
Lorraine smiled.
“You've been assuming I'm the only thief.”
