Chapter 15 - Four MonthsThe buyer was Northstar Residential Partners.

Its offer could cover much of Harbor Ridge’s debt and potentially conceal how badly the Mercer trust had been misused.
But the sale required trustee approvals.
Gregory Vale's resignation had blocked it.
Lorraine needed a replacement.
She nominated Thomas Mercer.
Daniel couldn't believe it.
“He already admitted taking money from her.”
“Which makes him vulnerable,” Rachel said.
Thomas refused.
Lorraine responded by exposing his old payment.
Thomas called Daniel.
“She'll burn everyone.”
“She already is.”
“I deserve some of it.”
“Yes.”
Thomas was silent.
Then he said, “I'm going to testify.”
Daniel didn't thank him.
Accountability wasn't a favor.
Meanwhile Evelyn’s internal investigation confirmed Peter Lang had breached company policies and concealed conflicts related to Harbor Ridge.
Cross Meridian severed his authority and referred relevant evidence through counsel.
Lang's leverage vanished.
He began cooperating more fully.
For the first time, Lorraine stood alone.
Except she still possessed one powerful weapon.
Public reputation.
Lorraine began telling extended family that Maya had engineered everything to seize Mercer money.
Some believed her.
Others didn't.
Maya received cruel messages.
Daniel wanted to respond publicly.
She stopped him.
“We don't fight every lie on Facebook.”
“She's attacking you.”
“And we have evidence.”
That distinction became their strategy.
Documents over arguments.
Recordings over accusations.
Facts over family gossip.
Nia returned to school with support from her parents and counselor.
One afternoon she brought home a drawing.
The maple tree again.
This time nobody was tied beneath it.
Three people sat under its branches.
Daniel, Maya and Nia.
Mark stood behind the fence holding a phone.
Daniel smiled.
“You drew Mr. Mark?”
“He helped.”
“Yes, he did.”
Nia pointed to an empty chair.
“That's Grandpa Richard.”
Daniel's eyes filled.
“You never met him.”
“I know.”
“Why is he there?”
“Mommy said he wanted me in the family.”
Daniel couldn't answer immediately.
That evening, Maya found him staring at the drawing.
“You okay?”
“No.”
She sat beside him.
“But I think I'm getting there.”
Then Daniel noticed something.
Nia had drawn a small black square beneath the tree.
“What’s that?”
“The pan.”
Daniel stiffened.
“Why did you draw it?”
Nia shrugged.
“Because it happened.”
The answer was simple.
Children didn't need adults to erase reality.
They needed adults to make reality safe enough to remember.
Three weeks later, the court scheduled a major evidentiary hearing concerning the trust administration.
Rachel prepared Daniel.
Samuel prepared financial exhibits.
Mark authenticated his original video.
Helen authenticated Richard’s records.
Celeste and Evelyn provided corporate documents.
Thomas agreed to testify.
Peter Lang negotiated through counsel.
Every path now pointed toward Lorraine.
Then, forty-eight hours before the hearing, Lorraine disappeared.
Her attorney said he didn't know where she was.
Her phone was off.
May you like
Her house was empty.
And the original Richard Mercer ledger—temporarily held in a secured evidence-review office connected to the civil case—was reported missing.
