Chapter 24 - Something Better

Noah turned ten.

For his birthday he asked for no giant party.

He wanted to visit Rosa’s childcare center.

Ethan thought this suspiciously wholesome.

Then Noah revealed he also wanted an expensive gaming computer.

Balance restored.

At Rosa’s center, children maintained a small garden.

Noah brought the old metal bowl.

He had drilled drainage holes with Ethan’s help.

They filled it with soil.

A child planted basil.

Vivian watched.

She understood immediately.

Her eyes filled.

Noah said:

“It’s not food bowl anymore.”

Vivian nodded.

“No.”

“What is it?”

“A planter.”

“Yep.”

He handed it to her.

“You put basil in your pasta.”

Vivian laughed through tears.

“Yes.”

The bowl sat on a windowsill.

Sunlight hit the steel.

Something once used to humiliate a child now held something growing.

Ethan thought the symbolism was almost too perfect.

Emily whispered:

“Don’t ruin it by saying that.”

He smiled.

Vivian approached Noah.

“Can I hug you?”

At ten, Noah rolled his eyes.

“You always ask now.”

“Yes.”

“You can.”

She hugged him.

Not because forgiveness erased the dining room.

Because years of asking had replaced years of assuming.

Chapter 1 had begun with adults deciding what Noah needed.

Now even affection required his answer.

That was the real transformation.
