Chapter 17 - Claire’s New Table

Claire opened another restaurant.

Everyone thought she had lost her mind.

She did not fund it alone.

That was the difference.

Three experienced partners.

Independent investors.

No Vivian guarantee.

No family-office money.

No Noah trust.

No secret rescue.

The restaurant was modest.

Seventy seats.

Regional American food.

Claire called it Second Course.

Ethan hated the name.

Emily loved it.

Opening night, Claire reserved a table for family.

Vivian asked:

“Is this free?”

Claire stared.

“No.”

Vivian looked offended.

Claire smiled.

“You taught me boundaries.”

Everyone laughed.

The food was excellent.

Then Noah refused the roasted squash.

Claire noticed.

Ethan noticed Claire noticing.

For one second history hovered.

Claire smiled at Noah.

“Don’t like squash?”

“No.”

“Excellent. More for me.”

She took his portion.

Noah smiled.

Ethan looked down.

Claire caught his eye.

No words needed.

After dinner the waiter brought the check.

Claire did not remove it.

Drew? There was no Drew—different story. Here Ethan reached.

Claire stopped him.

“Opening night. My treat.”

Ethan looked suspicious.

“Investor-approved marketing expense?”

Claire laughed.

“No. My money.”

“Documented?”

“Get out.”

The restaurant succeeded.

Not spectacularly.

That was healthy.

Claire paid herself salary.

Quarterly distributions came only when profits allowed.

She learned to love numbers she could defend.

Vivian became one of the most difficult customers.

Claire charged her full price.

Family evolution.
