Chapter 23 - A Question About the Bowl

At nine, Noah asked directly.

“Why was I eating under the table?”

He had seen an old photograph Rosa kept in a family archive.

Not the metal bowl image.

Just Mercer House dining room.

Memory surfaced.

Ethan and Emily sat with him.

No secrets.

Age-appropriate truth.

“Grandma Vivian thought making you uncomfortable would force you to eat,” Ethan explained.

“And Aunt Claire?”

“She defended Grandma.”

“Why?”

“Family habits. Money. Fear. A lot of grown-up mistakes.”

Noah frowned.

“Money?”

Ethan explained the trust generally.

People were arguing about a company sale.

Noah’s trust owned shares.

Some adults wanted control over the vote.

“Because of me?”

“No.”

“But my money?”

“Partly.”

Noah became quiet.

Then:

“Were you there?”

“I came home.”

“Why wasn’t Mom?”

Emily explained Boston.

Noah thought.

“Did Dad know before?”

The hardest question.

Ethan answered honestly.

“I knew Grandma was stricter than Mom wanted. I did not know how bad it became.”

“You should listen to Mom.”

Emily smiled triumphantly.

Ethan sighed.

“Yes.”

Noah nodded.

That seemed to satisfy him.

Then he asked:

“Can we keep the bowl?”

Ethan stared.

“What?”

Rosa had kept it as evidence originally.

After cases closed, it remained boxed with records.

“Why?”

Noah shrugged.

“I want see.”

They showed him.

Small stainless-steel bowl.

Ordinary.

He held it.

“That’s tiny.”

“You were tiny.”

“Can I have it?”

Emily asked:

“What would you do with it?”

May you like

Noah smiled.

“Something better.”
