Chapter 8 - The Chapel BellThe chapel had belonged to Emily’s grandfather.

It stood on an abandoned Mercer property seventy miles away.

Daniel had not been there in twelve years.

Police reached it before dawn.

The building was empty.

But someone had been there recently.

Food wrappers.

A child’s hairbrush.

A mattress.

Colored pencils.

Kate’s drawings covered one wall.

Daniel stood before them while investigators searched.

One showed the mansion.

One showed the hidden room.

One showed Vanessa crying.

Another showed a large man beside a black SUV.

A scar ran across his face in red crayon.

Grant.

Then Daniel saw a drawing of himself.

He stood beside the pool.

Kate had drawn a speech bubble over his head.

I CAN’T HEAR YOU.

Daniel had to turn away.

Maya approached quietly.

“She was thinking about you.”

“I was right there.”

“You didn’t know.”

“I should have.”

She did not argue.

Near the back wall, police found a page torn from one of Kate’s school notebooks.

Three columns of numbers.

Daniel recognized them.

Kate loved puzzles.

Emily had taught her simple substitution ciphers.

“Can you read it?” Maya asked.

“Maybe.”

He sat on the chapel floor.

The numbers corresponded to letters.

After ten minutes, a phrase emerged.

MARCUS IS AFRAID OF THE LEDGER.

“What ledger?”

Daniel did not know.

Police searched the chapel for another two hours.

Nothing.

Then an officer found a loose board beneath the altar.

Inside was an envelope.

Not a ledger.

A letter.

Kate’s handwriting covered the front.

FOR DAD ONLY.

Daniel’s hands trembled as he opened it.

Dad,

If you find this, I got moved again.

Vanessa told me she was sorry.

I don’t know if she is good or bad.

The scary man says you don’t want me anymore.

I know he is lying because you always come when I call unless you can’t hear me.

I heard Marcus say they need the ledger before the meeting.

Vanessa said Emily hid it.

He said Emily was dead.

Vanessa said, “Dead people can still ruin you.”

I think Mom hid something.

Please believe me.

Kate

Daniel read the last line three times.

Please believe me.

He pressed the paper against his forehead.

Maya crouched nearby.

“Emily knew something about Marcus.”

Daniel nodded.

A memory surfaced.

Two weeks before Emily died, she had asked Daniel to promise something.

“If anyone ever tells you I became paranoid at the end, don’t believe them.”

At the time he thought medication and fear had made her anxious.

He had kissed her forehead and promised.

Then grief buried the conversation.

Daniel looked toward Maya.

“Emily suspected somebody before she died.”

“Marcus?”

“I don’t know.”

“Where would she hide a ledger?”

Daniel almost said the piano.

But Kate had already hidden the memory card there.

Emily would have chosen somewhere different.

Then he remembered something strange.

After Emily’s funeral, a lawyer delivered a sealed box to Daniel.

Inside had been ordinary personal belongings.

Photographs.

Letters.

A music box.

And an old accounting ledger belonging to Emily’s grandfather.

Daniel had assumed it was sentimental.

It was still in storage.

They drove back to the mansion.

Daniel found the box in the basement archive.

The ledger looked ancient.

But when Maya opened the back cover, she saw that it had been altered.

A hidden compartment contained a flash drive.

They connected it to an isolated computer.

Encrypted files appeared.

Maya called a forensic technician.

Within hours, they opened the first folder.

Bank statements.

Contracts.

Emails.

Records dating back eleven years.

Marcus had been stealing from Mercer Residential long before Vanessa met Daniel.

Emily had discovered him.

Another folder contained a document she had written.

IF ANYTHING HAPPENS TO ME, REVIEW MARCUS VALE’S ACCOUNTS.

Daniel went still.

Emily had died of cancer.

Her doctors had documented the illness.

There was no mystery about her death.

But Marcus had apparently expected people might blame him for anything.

That was not what disturbed Daniel most.

The final folder contained correspondence between Marcus and a name Daniel recognized.

Richard Mercer.

Daniel’s father.

The emails showed that Daniel’s father had known Marcus was siphoning money.

Instead of firing him, he had used Marcus to create off-book payments and political slush funds.

Daniel stared at the documents.

The corruption had not begun with Vanessa.

It had begun inside his own family.

Maya opened the final spreadsheet.

Millions of dollars.

Bribes.

Kickbacks.

Shell companies.

And one highlighted property.

The mansion itself.

A note beside it read:

UNDERGROUND SERVICE MAP — ORIGINAL 1948 PLANS.

Daniel looked up.

The hidden room.

The greenhouse tunnel.

The chapel.

All of it might connect to old estate infrastructure.

Maya opened the attached map.

A network of service passages ran beneath several buildings.

One line extended from the greenhouse toward an old caretaker residence beyond the north woods.

Daniel stared.

“That house was demolished.”

Maya zoomed in.

“No.”

Only the visible structure had been demolished.

The foundation remained.

And beneath it was a storm shelter.

They looked at each other.

If Marcus knew the old plans—

Kate might still be on the property.
