Chapter 17 - What Emily Hid UnderwaterKate spent two nights in the hospital.

Daniel never left.
Vanessa was not allowed to visit.
When Kate learned her stepmother had been arrested, she did not react with anger.
That worried Daniel more.
“She said she was sorry,” Kate whispered.
“When?”
“In the first room.”
Daniel sat beside her bed.
“Vanessa came to see you?”
“Sometimes.”
“What did she say?”
“That she made a terrible mistake.”
Daniel struggled to control himself.
“Did she help you?”
“She gave me food.”
That sentence broke something inside him.
A child should never consider food an act of rescue.
Kate continued.
“Then Marcus told her not to come anymore.”
“Did Vanessa ever try to get you out?”
Kate thought.
“One time she opened the door and said we were leaving.”
Daniel leaned forward.
“What happened?”
“Robert was outside.”
Kate’s face tightened.
“He told her if she took me, he would send police pictures showing she locked me up.”
Daniel understood.
Vanessa had become prisoner to the crime she initiated.
That did not absolve her.
But it explained why the conspiracy lasted.
On the third morning Kate asked to go home.
Daniel hesitated.
“The mansion?”
She nodded.
“I want to see the pool.”
They returned under police protection.
Kate stood at the terrace edge.
The broken wall remained surrounded by barriers.
She stared at it.
Daniel waited.
“Do you want it torn down?”
“Later.”
She walked toward the pool.
At the shallow end, Kate knelt.
“Mom tapped here.”
Daniel entered the water fully dressed.
Maya followed along the edge.
Kate directed him toward the underwater tile line.
Daniel submerged.
Near the third tile from the corner, he found a tiny metal plate disguised as part of the pool light housing.
Technicians removed it.
Inside a waterproof compartment sat a small recorder and a sealed envelope.
Emily had built her own dead-man archive.
The recorder contained one message.
Daniel played it with Kate beside him.
Emily’s voice filled the room.
“Daniel, if you are hearing this, then the things I feared may have happened.”
Kate closed her eyes.
Daniel squeezed her hand.
“Robert has spent years turning our family’s worst instincts into tools. Your father’s ambition. Marcus’s greed. Vanessa’s anger, if Robert ever finds a way to reach her family.”
Daniel stared.
Emily had known Vanessa’s family connection before Daniel even met her.
“He studies people until he knows which wound to press.”
The recording continued.
“But remember this: Robert cannot create betrayal from nothing. People still choose.”
Vanessa chose.
Marcus chose.
Aaron chose.
Elise chose fear.
Daniel chose not to listen.
Emily’s voice softened.
“If Kate is old enough to understand this, tell her I’m sorry she inherited our unfinished problems.”
Kate began crying.
“I love you both. Do not protect the family name. Protect each other.”
The recording ended.
Inside the envelope were notarized copies of the same records Rachel held, along with one additional statement.
Emily had documented Robert’s plan to manipulate Vanessa years before Vanessa met Daniel.
He had identified her because of her father.
He had arranged for Marcus to “accidentally” meet her at a charity event.
The marriage was not Robert’s original plan.
Vanessa had genuinely fallen in love with Daniel and altered Marcus’s operation by marrying him.
That complicated everything.
Daniel visited Vanessa the next day.
He brought a copy of Emily’s statement.
Vanessa read it behind the glass.
Tears ran down her face.
“He knew.”
“Yes.”
“He knew about my father before Marcus approached me.”
“Yes.”
“He used me.”
Daniel remained expressionless.
Vanessa looked up.
“That doesn’t excuse me.”
“No.”
“I know.”
For the first time, she did not ask him to understand.
She simply sat with what she had done.
“Kate is alive,” Daniel said.
Vanessa covered her mouth.
Her shoulders shook.
“She’s alive?”
“Yes.”
“Can I see her?”
“No.”
Vanessa nodded.
That answer clearly hurt.
She accepted it.
“Will she ever—”
“I don’t know.”
Daniel stood.
Before leaving, Vanessa spoke.
“Robert will come back.”
Daniel stopped.
“He has nowhere to go.”
“That’s why.”
Daniel turned.
Vanessa looked terrified.
“He doesn’t run when he’s cornered.”
“What does he do?”
“He makes everyone else choose between two terrible things.”
Daniel thought of Emily’s recording.
Robert studied wounds.
He pressed them.
“What choice does he have left?”
Vanessa stared at him.
“Kate or the truth.”
Daniel returned home.
Maya was waiting.
A package had been delivered.
No return address.
Inside was Robert’s phone.
And a handwritten note.
ONE LAST CONVERSATION. NO POLICE. ASK KATE WHERE HER MOTHER TAUGHT HER TO LISTEN.

Daniel looked toward the pool.
Robert knew.
