Chapter 12 - What Daniel Refused to SeeThe drive to Estate Parcel Seventeen took forty-eight minutes.

Daniel spent every one remembering moments he had dismissed.
Kate telling him Vanessa entered his office.
Emily warning him not to trust people who called her paranoid.
Robert advising him not to personally manage the search.
Marcus urging him to rest.
Vanessa telling him the voices were dreams.
His greatest failure had not been stupidity.
It had been convenience.
Daniel had trusted explanations that allowed him not to look closer.
Police surrounded the abandoned school.
Tactical teams entered all three buildings.
Again, Kate was gone.
Daniel stood in the courtyard beneath dead oak trees.
Maya approached.
“Daniel.”
He recognized the tone.
“What?”
“We found a room.”
Inside the basement, one classroom had been converted into living quarters.
A bed.
A lamp.
Children's books.
A small table.
Unlike the hidden room, there were no chains.
Kate had apparently been allowed some movement.
On the wall hung a calendar.
Kate had crossed out days.
One hundred and nineteen marks.
Daniel touched the paper.
“She counted every day.”
Maya pointed toward the bottom.
Four days were not crossed out.
“She left here four days ago.”
On the desk sat a stack of letters.
All addressed to Daniel.
None sent.
Dad,
Today I remembered when Mom burned pancakes and you ate them anyway.
Dad,
Grant says you stopped looking for me. I told him he is dumb.
Dad,
I’m scared I’m going to forget your voice.
Daniel could not continue.
Maya gave him time.
At the bottom of the stack lay a different note.
Written recently.
Dad,
Robert said you chose the company instead of me.
I know he is lying.
He keeps asking where Mom hid the original ledger.
I told him I don't know.
I think he thinks I saw something in the piano.
I didn’t tell him about the chapel.
If I get out, I’m going to ring the bell.
Daniel looked up.
“Robert thinks Kate knows something else.”
Emily’s flash drive had contained copies.
Perhaps the original physical ledger still existed.
And Kate had mentioned the chapel.
They had searched beneath the altar.
But maybe not the bell itself.
Daniel called Maya’s team at the chapel.
An officer climbed into the belfry.
Inside the old brass bell, wrapped in oilcloth, they found a book.
Emily’s original ledger.
It contained signatures.
Not spreadsheets.
Not copies.
Original handwritten authorizations linking Robert to illegal payments.
Enough to destroy him.
Maya understood immediately.
“If Robert believes Kate knows where this is—”
“He can’t let her go.”
Daniel’s phone rang.
Robert.
Everyone froze.
Maya began recording.
Daniel answered.
“Robert.”
“I assume you’re disappointed.”
Daniel forced himself to remain calm.
“Where is she?”
“You should have listened to me after Emily died.”
“Where is Kate?”
“Your wife was always difficult.”
Daniel’s anger flared.
“Do not say her name.”
“Emily almost destroyed everything your father built.”
“You mean everything you stole.”
Robert laughed.
“Your father knew exactly what I did.”
“Kate has nothing to do with this.”
“She became involved when she took photographs.”
“Let her go.”
“Bring me the ledger.”
Daniel looked at Maya.
“Where?”
“You’ll receive instructions.”
“I need to hear Kate.”
“No.”
“Then you have nothing.”
Robert went silent.
Daniel continued.
“I’m not bringing you anything unless I know she is alive.”
A rustle.
Then—
“Dad?”
Daniel shut his eyes.
Kate.
Not a recording.
Her breathing was fast.
“Kate?”
“Dad!”
“I’m here.”
Someone took the phone away.
Daniel heard her shout his name.
Robert returned.
“Midnight. Come alone.”
“Where?”
“The place your father started all of this.”
Daniel knew.
The Maryland development.
The project that destroyed Vanessa’s father.
Robert ended the call.
Maya shook her head immediately.
“You’re not going alone.”
Daniel looked at the phone.
“He’ll expect police.”
“Yes.”
“So we make sure he sees none.”
Maya studied him.
“You realize this is exactly how people get killed.”
Daniel looked at Kate’s calendar.
One hundred and nineteen crossed-out days.
“No.”
May you like
His voice was quiet.
“This is how my daughter comes home.”
