Chapter 18 - Robert’s Last LieThey did not give Robert what he wanted.

They gave him what he expected.

Daniel sent a message to the recovered phone.

Tonight. Pool. 11 p.m.

Maya filled the mansion grounds with officers hidden beyond visible sightlines.

Kate stayed elsewhere with Rachel.

At 10:57, Daniel stood beside the broken wall.

At 11:03, Robert emerged from the blue door.

Daniel almost admired the audacity.

Robert had returned through the tunnels.

He looked exhausted.

His clothes were dirty.

But he still carried himself like chairman of the board.

“Where is Kate?”

“Safe.”

“Where is the underwater archive?”

“Safe too.”

Robert smiled faintly.

“Emily always overestimated you.”

Daniel said nothing.

“She believed you would eventually become brave.”

“I’m here.”

“Bravery would have been refusing to inherit your father’s company.”

“Maybe.”

That answer surprised Robert.

Daniel continued.

“I spent years defending a name I didn’t earn.”

Robert approached the pool.

“I built that company.”

“You stole from it.”

“So did your father.”

“Yes.”

Robert paused.

He had expected argument.

Daniel would no longer give him one.

“Give me Emily’s evidence.”

“No.”

“Then I release everything implicating your father.”

“Do it.”

Robert stared.

“Your company collapses.”

“I know.”

“Thousands of employees—”

“Will survive without our name on the building.”

Robert’s calm began to crack.

“You think morality is easy after inheriting billions?”

“No.”

Daniel stepped closer.

“I think you counted on me believing money made the answer complicated.”

Robert’s jaw tightened.

“So did your wife.”

“Vanessa made her choices.”

“And you still love her.”

Daniel said nothing.

That was the wound Robert wanted.

Maybe some part of Daniel still loved the woman Vanessa had appeared to be.

Love did not erase responsibility.

Robert smiled.

“You’ll never recover your marriage.”

“I’m not trying to.”

“Kate may hate you.”

“She’s allowed.”

“You may lose the company.”

“I’m selling it.”

Robert finally looked shocked.

Daniel almost smiled.

“You built everything around controlling what I was afraid to lose.”

He looked at the mansion.

“The house. The company. My reputation. Vanessa.”

Then back at Robert.

“You never understood that after losing Kate, none of those things mattered.”

Robert’s hand moved beneath his coat.

Daniel froze.

Maya’s voice sounded from concealed speakers.

“Robert, remove your hand.”

Robert looked around.

Police stepped from the darkness.

He laughed.

“You never could follow instructions.”

“No,” Daniel said.

“I finally stopped following yours.”

Robert withdrew his hand slowly.

Empty.

He had been bluffing.

Of course.

He had survived through fear more often than force.

Maya approached with officers.

Robert looked toward Daniel.

“You think this ends with me?”

“No.”

Daniel glanced at the broken wall.

“It ends with the truth.”

Robert was arrested.

This time there was no secret exit.

Federal charges followed.

Kidnapping conspiracy.

Wire fraud.

Obstruction.

Extortion.

Evidence tampering.

Marcus accepted a cooperation agreement only after learning Robert had blamed him for most of the financial crimes.

Grant did the same.

Aaron Price was arrested in Mexico six weeks later.

Owen Blake pleaded guilty to charges related to unlawful confinement and obstruction.

Elise received immunity for her cooperation regarding the recorded voice but lost the position she had spent years protecting.

Vanessa faced the hardest legal question.

She had initiated Kate’s confinement.

Even if she had later tried to stop Robert, her first choice made everything else possible.

Her lawyer negotiated.

Vanessa refused a trial.

She pleaded guilty.

The sentencing hearing was scheduled for spring.

Daniel did not attend the plea.

Kate did.

Not inside the courtroom.

She sat with Rachel in a private room and watched on video.

When Vanessa admitted what she had done, Kate remained expressionless.

Afterward she asked one question.

“Did she tell the truth?”

Daniel answered carefully.

“About what she did, yes.”

Kate nodded.

“Good.”

That night they stood beside the pool.

Workers had asked Daniel whether he wanted the hidden room demolished.

He had not decided.

Kate looked at the broken wall.

“Can we keep one piece?”

“Why?”

“So I remember it broke.”

Daniel stared at her.

Not remember the room.

Remember that it broke.

He nodded.

“Whatever you want.”

Kate took his hand.

Then she asked the question Daniel had feared since finding her.

“Dad?”

“Yes?”

“Why didn’t you believe me when I told you Vanessa went into your office?”

Daniel could have defended himself.

He could have said he was working.

Distracted.

Grieving.

Trusting.

Instead he gave her what the adults around her had failed to give for months.

The whole truth.

“Because I wasn’t listening.”

Kate looked at him.

Daniel’s voice shook.

“And I’m sorry.”

She squeezed his hand.

“I know.”

Across the pool, workers began dismantling the false wall.

May you like

Brick by brick.

And behind them, for the first time, Daniel saw daylight pass completely through.
