Ms. Jordan.
She noticed.
“You okay?”
Noah almost said yes.
Old habit.
Then:
“The ruler bothers me.”
She looked at it.
“Okay.”
She put it in a drawer.
No questions.
No public explanation.

“Do you need it?”
“What?”
“The ruler.”
“No.”
“You can use it.”
Ms. Jordan studied him.
“Do you want me to?”
Noah thought.
“No.”
“Then drawer.”
