Chapter 12 - Liam Loses His ShieldLiam’s transfer became permanent for the semester.

His new teacher, Ms. Parker, did something Mrs. Dalton rarely did.

She treated his work normally.

First week:

Liam forgot his reading response.

“Bring it tomorrow.”

No special exemption.

No humiliation.

Second week:

He interrupted twice.

“Liam, stop.”

He stopped.

Nothing catastrophic.

Third week:

He argued with another student.

Both spoke to counselor.

Record documented accurately.

Liam went home furious.

Eric listened.

“My old teacher wouldn’t write me up for that.”

“Your old teacher was your mother.”

“That’s the point.”

Eric looked at him.

“What point?”

Liam could not explain.

For years favoritism had felt embarrassing.

Now equal treatment felt like loss.

That realization scared him.

At therapy he said:

“I hate that I liked getting away with stuff.”

The therapist answered:

“Of course you liked some of it.”

Liam looked up.

“That makes me bad.”

“No.”

“Then what?”

“It means advantages can feel good even when they’re unfair.”

He thought.

“What do I do?”

“Notice.”

Then choose differently.

Liam started doing something small.

When teachers gave him extensions, he asked whether the rule applied to everyone.

Not constantly.

Not performatively.

Sometimes.

He did not become perfect.

That would be another unrealistic story.

But the power Mrs. Dalton built around him began dissolving.

Without her protection, Liam discovered he could survive ordinary consequences.

That was healing too.
