Chapter 18 - The Criminal CaseProsecutors reviewed the video.

Noah’s physical injury was minimal.
Three ruler strikes.
Intentional.
Disciplinary.
State law and district policy prohibited corporal punishment.
The prosecutor charged Mrs. Dalton with misdemeanor assault and an educator-related child-mistreatment offense available under local statute.
No felony battery.
No claim of serious bodily injury.
Her attorney negotiated.
Noah’s parents did not control charges.
That frustrated Gavin.
Then he accepted it.
The criminal justice system was not a family revenge service.
Mrs. Dalton eventually entered a plea to misdemeanor assault.
The second count was dismissed under agreement.
She received probation, community service unrelated to children, mandatory counseling, and a no-contact order concerning Noah outside legal proceedings.
No jail.
Some people online were furious.
Tessa was not.
She looked at Noah.
“How do you feel?”
He shrugged.
“She can’t teach?”
“Not right now.”
“Can’t contact me?”
“No.”

“Then okay.”
