Chapter 16 - Tessa and Gavin Look BackThe Monroes opened old school emails.

Not to build a case.

The case already existed.

To understand themselves.

Noah had complained five times.

Not always clearly.

Mrs. Dalton hates when I ask why.

Tessa:

Some teachers value quiet. Try adapting.

Liam gets away with everything.

Gavin:

Focus on yourself.

She said I make excuses.

Tessa:

Show her you can be responsible.

I don’t want to go tomorrow.

Gavin:

You can’t avoid people because they’re strict.

Each answer sounded reasonable alone.

Together:

a pattern of minimizing.

Tessa cried.

Gavin became angry at himself.

Dr. Patel, now working with the family, stopped them.

“What does Noah need from this insight?”

They looked at each other.

Not endless guilt.

Changed behavior.

They created a family rule:

When Noah said an adult made him feel unsafe, they would ask three questions before interpreting.

“What happened?”

“What did you do?”

“What do you want from us?”

Not automatically believe every conclusion.

Not automatically dismiss.

Listen first.

Noah approved.

Then added:

“And don’t email the school without telling me unless it’s emergency.”

Gavin winced.

May you like

“Fair.”

Power returned in small agreements.
